The Problems of Philosophy

The Problems of Philosophy

$18.42

Philosopher, mathematician, and sociologist (and winner of the Nobel Prize for literature), Bertrand Russell wore many hats in his long and distinguished career. His vast array of intellectual gifts included a remarkable talent for making seemingly arcane subjects accessible to nonspecialists, and The Problems of Philosophy represents a prime example of this particular talent. Russell offers an intelligible and thought-provoking guide to the fundamentals of philosophic thought, considering such topics as the distinction between appearance and reality, the existence and nature of matter, idealism, inductive logic, intuitive knowledge, and several other stimulating subjects. The Booklist of The American Library Association recommended this volume as" … concise, free from technical terms, and perfectly clear to the general reader with no prior knowledge of the subject." Both students and general readers will find no finer introduction to the discipline of philosophy than this informative and immensely readable work in the lowest-priced edition now available.

Philosophy: Confronting the Unavoidable, 1st Edition

Philosophy: Confronting the Unavoidable, 1st Edition

$81.99

PHILOSOPHY: CONFRONTING THE UNAVOIDABLE is a broad yet highly coherent presentation of philosophy in a story-like format, linking successively issues in logic (which, using the Kantian taxonomy, includes epistemology), metaphysics, ethics, and social philosophy. This book avoids the technical issues that are of interest only to specialists by following the theme suggested in the title, that philosophy deals centrally with the kinds of commitments made just by living a human life. With a continuously unfolding exposition of all the main areas of philosophy that is unified by the contention that philosophy is of primary value to everyone, this text provides a clear sense of direction that should deepen class discussions and enhance interest in these essential issues.

Continental Philosophy (Paperback)

$42.88

This book is a fully updated and expanded new edition of An Introduction to Continental Philosophy, first published in 1996. It provides a clear, concise and readable introduction to philosophy in the continental tradition. It is a wide-ranging and reliable guide to the work of such major figures as Nietzsche, Habermas, Heidegger, Arendt, Sartre, Foucault, Derrida and Žižek. At the same time, it situates their thought within a coherent overall account of the development of continental philosophy since the Enlightenment. Individual chapters consider the character of modernity, the Enlightenment and its continental critics; the ideas of Marxism, the Frankfurt School and Habermas; hermeneutics and phenomenology; existentialism; structuralism, post-structuralism and postmodernism. In addition to the thinkers already mentioned, there is extended discussion of the ideas of Kant, Hegel, Dilthey, Husserl, Gadamer, Kierkegaard, de Beauvoir and Lyotard. The new edition includes an additional, full-length chapter on continental philosophy in the twenty-first century focusing on Giorgio Agamben, Alain Badiou and Slavoj Žižek. Continental Philosophy: An Introduction is an invaluable introductory text for courses on continental philosophy as well as courses in the humanities and social sciences dealing with major figures or influential approaches within that tradition.

Experimental Philosophy (Hardcover)

Experimental Philosophy (Hardcover)

$109.77

Experimental philosophy uses experimental research methods from psychology and cognitive science in order to investigate both philosophical and metaphilosophical questions. It explores philosophical questions about the nature of the psychological world – the very structure or meaning of our concepts of things, and about the nature of the non-psychological world – the things themselves. It also explores metaphilosophical questions about the nature of philosophical inquiry and its proper methodology. This book provides a detailed and provocative introduction to this innovative field, focusing on the relationship between experimental philosophy and the aims and methods of more traditional analytic philosophy. Special attention is paid to carefully examining experimental philosophy`s quite different philosophical programs, their individual strengths and weaknesses, and the different kinds of contributions that they can make to our philosophical understanding. Clear and accessible throughout, it situates experimental philosophy within both a contemporary and historical context, explains its aims and methods, examines and critically evaluates its most significant claims and arguments, and engages with its critics.

The Philosophy of Punk

The Philosophy of Punk

$24.09

I can safely recommend this to young punks looking for some history from the old timers who probably will want it just for all the cool pictures. A really impressive volume that many people will find useful and enjoyable. — Factsheet 5 As the subculture of punk approaches its twentieth anniversary, a fairly clear set of ideas (both revolutionary and reactionary) have emerged. This is the first book to give an inside look at the thriving culture as an important present day movement, and as a way of life. Covering topics such as the media's (mis)representation of punk, skinheads, fanzines, anarchism, homosexuality, and environmentalism. Includes a new selection of over fifty photos taken by the author over the last decade. Overall, this is a very in-depth study of punk values, and how punk looks out towards the straight world. I feel it is excellent for understanding punk, especially the highest ideals that it has aspired to obtain. — Maximum Rockn'Roll

Political Philosophy (Paperback)

Political Philosophy (Paperback)

$39.36

Politicians invoke grand ideas: social justice, democracy, liberty, equality, community. But what do these ideas really mean? How can politicians across the political spectrum appeal to the same values? This revised and expanded edition of Political Philosophy: A Beginner`s Guide for Students and Politicians, answers these important questions. Accessible and lively, the book is an ideal student text, but it also brings the insights of the world`s leading political philosophers to a wide general audience. Using plenty of examples, it equips readers to think for themselves about the ideas that shape political life. Democracy works best when both politicians and voters move beyond rhetoric to think clearly and carefully about the political principles that should govern their society. But clear thinking is difficult in an age when established orthodoxies have fallen by the wayside. Bringing political philosophy out of the ivory tower and within the reach of all, this book provides us with tools to cut through the complexities of modern politics. In so doing, it makes a valuable contribution to the democratic process.

Providing an introductory guide in plain language for the reader who wishes to understand Sartre’s philosophical arguments, The Philosophy of Sartre reconstructs key instances of Sartre`s philosophical reasoning at work and shows how certain questions arise for Sartre and what philosophical tools he uses to address those questions.

Drawing deeply on a lifetime of scholarship and incisive commentary, she deftly weaves Hume’s autobiography together with his writings and correspondence, finding in these personal experiences new ways to illuminate his ideas about religion, human nature, and the social order.Excerpts from Hume’s autobiography at the beginning of each chapter open a window onto the eighteenth-century context in which Hume’s philosophy developed. Famous in Christian Britain as a polymath and a nonbeliever, Hume recounts how his early encounters with clerical authority laid the foundation for his lifelong skepticism toward religion. In Scotland, where he grew up, he had been forced to study lists of sins in order to spot his own childish flaws, he reports. Later, as a young man, he witnessed the clergy’s punishment of a pregnant unmarried servant, and this led him to question the violent consequences of the Church’s emphasis on the doctrine of original sin. Baier’s clear interpretation of Hume’s Treatise on Human Nature explains the link between Hume’s growing disillusionment and his belief that ethics should be based on investigations of human nature, not on religious dogma.Four months before he died, Hume concluded his autobiography with a eulogy he wrote for his own funeral. It makes no mention of his flaws, critics, or disappointments. Baier’s more realistic account rivets our attention on connections between the way Hume lived and the way he thought—insights unavailable to Hume himself, perhaps, despite his lifelong introspection.

The Political Philosophy of Alexander Hamilton (Paperback)

The Political Philosophy of Alexander Hamilton (Paperback)

$51.35

America`s first treasury secretary and the principal author of the Federalist Papers, Alexander Hamilton is one of the nation`s important early statesmen. Michael P. Federici`s introduction to this Founding Father`s political thought firmly places Hamilton among the country`s original political philosophers as well.Hamilton remains something of an enigma in the history of American political thought and of the nation`s founding. Conservatives and liberals both claim him, and in his writings one can find material to support the positions of either camp. Taking a balanced and objective approach, Federici sorts through the written and historical record to reveal Hamilton`s philosophy as the synthetic product of a learned and pragmatic man whose intellectual genealogy draws on Classical thinkers such as Cicero and Plutarch, Christian theologians, and David Hume, Montesquieu, and other Enlightenment philosophers. In evaluating the thought of this republican, would-be empire builder, Federici explains that the apparent contradictions found in the Federalist Papers and other examples of Hamilton`s writings reflect both his practical engagement with debates over the French Revolution, commercialism, and other global issues of the times, as well as his philosophical search for a balance between central authority and federalism at home. In doing so, this book challenges the conventional view of Hamilton as a monarchist and shows him instead to be a primary advocate of American constitutionalism.Devoted to the whole of Hamilton`s political theory, this accessible and teachable analysis makes clear the enormous influence Hamilton had on the development of American political and economic institutions and policies.

Practical Philosophy of Sport and Physical Activity – 2nd Edition (Book)

$58.95

Philosophy is a crucial, yet often overlooked, part of kinesiology students’ education. Practical Philosophy of Sport and Physical Activity, Second Edition, provides students with a thorough, clear, and practical introduction to the philosophy of physical activity and sport, and in doing so, prepares them for the ethical questions they will face as professionals. This second edition has been significantly revised, and it has been enhanced to include the following features:Expanded instruction on practical ethics in physical activity, guiding students in how to rank values and turn those values into actionsNew material that emphasizes physical activity as well as sport, and provides specific holistic techniques for the practitioner in the workplaceIn-depth case studies along with discussion questions that can be used to teach students how to follow a philosophical argument and come to their own conclusions The case studies, one on running up the score and the other on performance-enhancing substances, are based on two articles that are reprinted in their entirety in the appendix. Practical Philosophy of Sport and Physical Activity, Second Edition, helps students examine key moral questions in sport. Its approach to the content helps students follow and dissect ethical arguments, think through philosophic issues, and apply theory to practice. Each chapter includes objectives, philosophical exercises, reviews, and study questions to reinforce understanding. Kretchmar’s engaging writing style accentuates important topics of discussion, focusing the readers’ attention on the philosophy behind the practice or strategy. As a result, students develop their philosophical skills, refine their personal philosophy concerning physical activity and sport, and learn that philosophy can be clear, practical, and holistic, rather than obscure, overly theoretical, and dualistic. The text is arranged in four parts. Part I introduces students to the nature and methods of philosophy. Part II focuses on issues relating to the nature of the athlete or client and includes analyses of dualism, scientific materialism, and holism. Part III delves into kinesiology issues, including the nature of play, games, and competition, and Part IV provides expanded material on ethics, value choices, and active lifestyles. This text provides students with the practical tools and specific techniques they need to think ethically and systematically, as they become skilled practitioners

Plato`s Political Philosophy (Hardcover)

Plato`s Political Philosophy (Hardcover)

$148.19

This comprehensive, yet compact, introduction examines Plato`s understanding of law, justice, virtue, and the connection between politics and philosophy.Focusing on three of Plato`s dialogues — The Laws, The Republic, and The Statesman — Mark Blitz lays out the philosopher`s principal interests in government and the strength and limit of the law, the connection between law and piety, the importance of founding, and the status and limits of political knowledge. He examines all of Plato`s discussions of politics and virtues, comments on specific dialogues, and discusses the philosopher`s explorations of beauty, pleasure, good, and the relations between politics and reason. Throughout, Blitz reinforces Plato`s emphasis on clear and rigorous reasoning in ethics and political life and explains in straightforward language the valuable lessons one can draw from examining Plato`s writings. The only introduction to Plato that both gathers his separate discussions of politically relevant topics and pays close attention to the context and structure of his dialogues, this volume directly contrasts the modern view of politics with that of the ancient master. It is an excellent companion to Plato`s Dialogues.

Deepening divisions separate today`s philosophers, first, from the culture at large; then, from each other; and finally, from philosophy itself. Though these divisions tend to coalesce publicly as debates over the Enlightenment, their roots lie much deeper. Overcoming them thus requires a confrontation with the whole of Western philosophy. Only when we uncover the strange heritage of Aristotle`s metaphysics, as reworked, for example, by Descartes and Kant, can we understand contemporary philosophy`s inability to dialogue with women, people of color, LGBTs, and other minority groups. Only when we have understood that inability can we see how the thought of Hegel and Heidegger contains the seeds of a remedy. And only when armed with such a remedy can philosophy rise to the challenges posed by thinkers such as David Foster Wallace and Abraham Lincoln. The book`s interpretations of these figures and others past and present are as scrupulous as its conclusions will be controversial. The result contributes to the most important question confronting us today: does reason itself have a future?

An eminent public figure under the Gothic emperor Theodoric, Boethius (c. 475-525 AD) was also an exceptional Greek scholar. It was to the Greek philosophers that he turned when he fell from favor and was imprisoned in Pavia. Written in the period leading up to his brutal execution, it is a dialogue that alternates from prose to verse between the ailing prisoner and his'nurse' Philosophy, whose instruction on the nature of fortune and happiness, good and evil, fate and free will, restore his health and bring him to enlightenment. The clarity of Boethius's thought and his breadth of vision made The Consolation of Philosophy hugely popular throughout medieval Europe and his ideas suffused the thought of Chaucer and Dante.

Over the past 40 years, philosophy has become a vital arena for feminists. Recent feminist work has challenged canonical claims about the role of women and has developed new methods of analysis and critique, and in doing so has reinvigorated central areas of philosophy. The Feminist Philosophy Collection presents new work representative of feminist contributions to the five most significant areas of philosophy: Feminist Ethics and Political and Social Philosophy; Feminist Philosophy of Religion; Feminist Aesthetics and Philosophy of Art; Feminist History of Philosophy; and Feminist Epistemology and Philosophy of Science.Feminist work in some fields, notably ethics and social theory, has been going on for four decades, while the youngest area of feminist work is, arguably, feminist philosophy of art and aesthetics. Thus, some volumes will contain essays that build upon established feminist work as they explore new territory, while others do not have that luxury, but are all the more exciting in that they break new ground.

ShihDb al-Din al-Suhrawardi was born around 1154, probably in northwestern Iran. Spurred by a dream in which Aristotle appeared to him, he rejected the Avicennan Peripatetic philosophy of his youth and undertook the task of reviving the philosophical tradition of the "Ancients." Suhruwardi`s philosophy grants an epistemological role to immediate and atemporal intuition. It is explicitly anti-Peripatetic and is identified with the pre-Aristotelian sages, particularly Plato. The subject of his hikmat al-Ishraq—now available for the first time in English—is the "science of lights," a science that Suhrawardi first learned through mystical exercises reinforced later by logical proofs and confirmed by what he saw as the parallel experiences of the Ancients. It was completed on 15 September 1186; and at sunset that evening, in the western sky, the sun, the moon, and the five visible planets came together in a magnificent conjunction in the constellation of Libra. The stars soon turned against Suhrawardi, however, who was reluctantly put to death by the son of Saladin, the sultan of Egypt, in 1191.
