Mother of Pearl is incredibly popular in the Middle East, making it a major part of many of our most popular Holy Land gifts. Same popularity has done what greed and the desire for profits usually do, however, and encouraged many retailers to start production pearl fake pearl (iridescent plastic) and the market as the real thing. So how can you tell if it really is and if you are looking for a fraud?

What is Mother of Pearl?

Before you closely can start looking for a real mother to differentiate from a cleverly disguised fake pearl you need to know what the mother of pearl. Mother of Pearl (also known as nacre) is, literally, the "mother" of the pearls today. It is the iridescent layer of material that makes the lining of the shell of many molluscs and consists of sheets of aragonite, combined with an organic material similar to silk to both strong and flexible and suitable for use in jewelry making.

How to Tell If It's Just Pretty Mother of Pearl or Plastic

There are many opinions about how a real mother of pearl to distinguish fake if you were shopping in the Middle East. A smart shopper recommends a little test (if possible), stating: "If it does not click, the plastic." Beware, they break. Others say that the real mother of pearl is usually colder than room temperature. If you happen to talk about keys or small accessories that you can usually look at the back for an idea or plastic or the real mother of pearl.

Remember, real pearl comes from molluscs and thus originates from areas where these organisms can be found. It is native to the Middle East, but most important sources for the products of today will from the pearl oyster, freshwater pearl mussels and abalone.

Pearl oysters found in commercially used the Persian Gulf, the Red Sea, the Mediterranean Sea, the Indian Ocean and parts of the western Pacific Ocean. Some are caught in the waters off the Australian coast, particularly the Shark Bay pearl oyster. Some species are also harvested for the coast Fiji, Tahiti, Myanmar, the Philippines and Baja.

Freshwater pearl mussels are listed as an endangered species, but are still harvested by permitting. They are native to the northern regions of the world, especially Eastern – Canada and New England, Russia and continental Europe. Abalone is considerably more common and much less threatened and can be found along the coastal waters of every continent, except certain parts of the eastern Atlantic Ocean. Most are harvested in the cold waters off the southern coasts of New Zealand, South Africa and Australia, and parts of western North America and Japan.
