As expected, there are plenty of nods to old-school rap, from “Lausd,” with its brief tribute to hip-hop classic “The Bridge” by MC Shan, to “Monkey Bars,” where the group claim inspiration (yet just a bit of distance) from their heroes: “Now you know us but it’s not the Cold Crush, four MCs so it ain’t the Furious/Not the Force M.D.’s or the three from Treacherous, it’s a blast from the past from the moment we bust.” Where Quality Control really laps previous Jurassic 5 material is not only the lyrical material, though, but the themes and focus of the message tracks “Lausd,” “World of Entertainment (Woe Is Me),” and “Contribution.” The four-man crew take on major media and the responsibilities of adulthood with a degree of authority, eloquence, and compassion never before heard in rap music. Real Control $9.32 Anders Wendin (aka Moneybrother) may not be a familiar name in North America, but he’s a Pop Star of the first magnitude in Scandinavia and Europe, and he sure sounds like one on his fifth album, Real Control, where he shows off the confidence and swagger of a guy who knows his way around an arena-size stage or a recording studio. Real Control also finds Moneybrother changing up his style just a bit; while Joe Strummer and Bruce Springsteen were clear and audible influences on his earlier work, on this one, classic glam rock is an obvious part of the formula. The dance-friendly strut of “Born Under a Bad Sign” recalls Queen in the era when John Deacon’s basslines carried the day, and the heart-on-my-sleeve ballad “6 AM” both lyrically and melodically channels David Bowie at his most melodramatic. Moneybrother clearly isn’t afraid of the grand gesture, and on Real Control he shows he has the talent and the charisma to pull it off; if his voice is a bit rough around the edges, he has the right instincts to make the most of what he’s got (he can also find a window of clarity when he needs it), and his songs are clever and imaginative while still boasting the melodies and rock action to make them play on a big canvas. And Wendin adds just the right touch of understated humor to this music; “(Guess Who’s Gonna) Get Some Tonight” may sound like vintage heartland rock, but the tongue-in-cheek lyrics play with the formula, and it’s hard to argue with the cheeky philosophical statement in the reggae-laced “We Die Only Once (And for Such a Long Time).” (And rest assured, neither your disc or your CD player are defective, “Showdown” really ends that way.) Half Control $11.98 Half Control documents a lost chapter in the history of Rhode Island’s electronically altered post-punks Six Finger Satellite. In 1998, Six Finger Satellite released their fourth full-length album, Law of Ruins; showing a clear Krautrock influence, Law of Ruins found the band moving into a new direction, and while the group toured extensively behind it, it was a challenging effort that wasn’t as popular with their audience as some of their previous work. In 1999, while Six Finger Satellite took a break from the road, bassist James Apt and guitarist John MacLean left the band, and founding members J. Ryan (vocals, synthesizer) and Rick Pelletier (drums) recruited Shawn Greenlee and Joel Kyack to replace them. Six Finger Satellite broke up in 2001 and Law of Ruins came to be seen as the group’s final recorded statement, but as it happens, shortly before calling it quits, the Ryan/Pelletier/Greenlee/Kyack lineup began work on an album, and Half Control presents eight previously unreleased tracks (running about a half-hour) from this edition of the group. In some respects, the music on Half Control represents a step back from Law of Ruins; this music is less experimental and more straightforward, with a harder and more aggressive edge, more guitar, and a more traditional role for Ryan’s keyboards (though they still maintain their slightly off-putting sci-fi tone). But if Half Control isn’t as arty and ambitious as Law of Ruins, it rocks a lot harder, and for sheer physical impact, this is as strong as anything the band recorded after Severe Exposure. The songs are simple and cyclically constructed to build tension and momentum, and Ryan’s fierce, intense vocals only add to the impact, with Kyack’s guitar and the excellent rhythm section egging him on every step of the way. Half Control appears as J. Ryan and Rick Pelletier have once again reunited Six Finger Satellite and released an album of fresh material, and while this isn’t quite the great lost 6FS session, it’s a very good lost 6FS session, and the strength and precision of these performances make it clear this was a period in their career that deserved to be documented, however brief it may have been. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi Performers: Joel Kyack – Guitar; Jon J. Loose Control $9.58 By the time Plane Mistaken for Stars ended their run after 2006′s Mercy, nearly all the emo influences audible on their early sides were gone, and guitarist Chuck French and bassist Neil Keener’s have effectively crushed the last bits into dust with their new band, Git Some. On their second album, Loose Control, Git Some are one badass rock & roll juggernaut, rolling like a truck driver wired on Mini-Thins and Mountain Dew, and not about to slow down his 18-wheeler for anything stupid enough to cross his path. Fusing the leaden thunder and doom-struck imagery of heavy metal with the velocity of punk rock and the “WTF?” chaos of noise rock, Loose Control is the work of some sort of hellish boogie band, just tight enough to strike with the unity of a closed fist and boasting a manic power that makes these guys sound like they’re striking at once but from four different directions. While this album barrels through 13 songs in 33 minutes, much of the time, this sounds like one single, vengeful thought that refuses to end, a demolition derby with the cars going 75 miles an hour. Subtlety and songcraft are not Git Some’s long suits, but Loose Control makes it pretty clear that’s not where their interests lie — Git Some want to mess you up, and when French and Keener bring the noise, drummer Andrew Lindstrom lays down the thunder, and vocalist Luke Fairchild opens up his iron larynx, they make music that sounds like rock & roll’s answer to a crowbar striking the back of your skull. Mark of the Devil (DVD) $39.2 This brutal film is a cult favorite of 70s horror fans, set during the witch-hunting craze in 18th Century Austria, and it remains controversial in many ways. Scriptwriter Adrian Hoven was replaced as director by Michael Armstrong before the film was in production. Armstrong was subsequently fired from his position after reworking much of the script and allegedly experimenting with drugs while on the job. Though uncredited, Hoven is rumored to have directed as much as 60% of the film. The film itself is a gratuitous feast of skin, sin, and ultra-violence, accompanying the opening credits with the brutal rape of a wagonful of nuns. The rapists happen to be the local witch-hunters, led by Albino (Reggie Nalder), who spearheads a number of atrocities before the innocent witch-hunter-in-training Baron Christian (Udo Kier) stumbles upon him mid-rape/murder of a servant girl, Vanessa. Christian's compassion for Vanessa enrages his mentor Count Cumberland, disillusioning poor Christian, who begins to see that the witch hunts are merely an excuse to steal the people's land and rape beautiful, buxom women. He leads the townspeople to revolt, but ultimately fails in his efforts, as Cumberland escapes and his people turn on him. Various subplots based on actual historical accounts of the time include puppeteers accused of witchcraft for their masterful control of marionettes, and a woman who suffers at the hands of a bishop she has accused of rape. Soul Control $9.58 Cutting his sideman teeth with legends like Grover Washington, Jr. and Joe Zawinul, Gerald Veasley has established himself as one of contemporary jazz’s most dynamic young bassists. When he launched his solo career with 1992′s Look Ahead, he seemed poised to bring his chosen axe to the forefront of a genre that has traditionally relied too heavily on horns and guitars. His bright soloing style suggested that he might even achieve the same sort of impact on a new generation of listeners as his idols Stanley Clarke and Jaco Pastorius had on an earlier one. Thus far, however, Veasley has chosen to forgo the kind of monster licks those two were famous for, and settle for an easygoing smooth jazz feel long on grooves and nice melodies but short on any real statement as a leader. His third project, Soul Control (Heads Up) is a slick, sharply produced affair, but he once again chooses not to make a stand and cuts loose only sparingly, most notably on the closing track, the down-home Southern rock and blues jam “Earthworm,” featuring violinist John Blake. Over the long haul, the mark of any truly great contempo artist is an identifiable, singular sound that functions as a calling card of sorts. More often than not, that involves clueing listeners in as to the artist’s lead voice.
