Clean Clear

Keeping a saltwater aquarium Crystal Clear is not difficult to achieve. It is not a big thing that will help keep your water clear, but a series of smaller things that combination keeps your marine aquarium water clean and clear.

16 Easy Ways To Keep saltwater aquariums clean and clear

  • Using filters with very fine polishing filter pads or filter elements
  • Use a coarse gravel substrate aragonite not blown around the tank
  • Do not use fine sand blowing around and will cloud the aquarium water
  • Do not overfeed your fish because it can lead to bacterial flowers and turbid water
  • Keep All Your filters clean and operating efficiently, so they can filter out the maximum amount of water
  • Do not buy fish that like to dig or dig into the aquarium gravel and debris vomiting
  • Turn your water on a regular basis and seek to 20-30% monthly change
  • Use activated carbon to remove organic matter and discoloration from the water
  • Do not over stock your saltwater aquarium with many fish
  • Use a slightly larger than necessary protein skimmer to skim the water clear
  • Vacuum your gravel when doing water changes to solid waste disposal
  • Adequate circulation, so that dirt can be kept in suspension long enough to be removed through the filter system
  • Use a UV sterilizer any bacteria or algae in the water, which can lead to cloudy deaths
  • Not more than additive unless you can test for them and are sure you need them
  • Use reverse osmosis water for your salt water and the water you add to the saltwater tank toxins and impurities that are found in straight tap water minimize
  • Use a magnet cleaner to clean the inside glass of the tank where dirt can settle and look cloudy.

New Orleans and Atlanta both have mega-cliques holding down their local rap reputations. Well, Memphis, Tennessee, has one too. The Hypnotize Minds label, home of the Three 6 Mafia, has been wreaking havoc on local dancefloors (with tracks like the Mafia’s 1996 underground smash, “Tear Da Club Up”) since 1993. Veterans of lyrical disorder, this group is well known for its slasher-flick lyrical con…

Clean Tech, Clean Profits (Hardcover)

Clean Tech, Clean Profits (Hardcover)

$36.83

The squeeze on carbon is beginning in earnest. By 2020, we will have made a start on running our homes, workplaces and vehicles in smarter and less polluting ways. By 2050, we should have reconfigured how we generate power, conserve water and manage waste. But talk of an 80% cut in carbon emissions remains an extraordinarily ambitious goal, particularly when new economic powers like China and India are added to the equation.   Ideas for switching to a low-carbon world are bound to take numerous forms. For businesses, the challenge is to find a way of commercializing these ideas. Although their scale can be small and the set-up costs high, the overall potential of this shift is enormous, as evidenced by the amount of private capital and public funds looking for clean technology in which to invest. Clean Tech, Clean Profits is a practical guide for entrepreneurs, innovators, designers and investors looking to bring clean technologies to market. Drawing on a wide range of expertise and experience in strategy, technology, branding, intellectual property, design and finance, it provides clear insight on how companies can best position themselves for the growth in the clean tech-industry.

Clean (Paperback)

Clean (Paperback)

Clean presents the revolutionary health program that Uruguayan-born Alejandro Junger, MD, director of integrative medicine at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, has developed over years of practice. Beginning with his own personal experience, Junger leads us through the steps of restoring and rejuvenating our bodies and minds with resources that we’ve always had inside us but very often neglected to use. Junger offers a bleak diagnosis of a world that has filled our bodies with toxins. We have come to accept our bothersome health problems—such as allergies, restless nights, anxiety, indigestion, extra weight, acne, head colds, and viruses—as givens. We look to over-the-counter medication to alleviate our daily ailments, a practice that only perpetuates chronic health issues instead of curing their causes. Junger steers us away from self-medicating and claims instead that our health problems can be remedied if we restore our bodies to their full, natural potential. The program is designed for people who live busy lives and find themselves all too often succumbing to toxic fast food diets and poor sleeping and exercise habits. Junger gives the reader ample information and guidance in each chapter of the book, and includes multiple easy-to-prepare and healthy recipes as an appendix. Written in clear, concise, and accessible prose, Clean provides us with the tools to empower ourselves and to take a refreshing, thoughtful look at the way we live today.

Believe [Clean]

Believe [Clean]

$10.38

From the moment the jagged riffing of “Prayer” begins to pour out of the speakers, one thing is quite clear: Disturbed has learned to cut the fat. Their first record was a massively heavy affair, but at times the music would get mired in somewhat needless passages. But on Believe, Disturbed takes the sort of jump that their heroes in Soundgarden and Pantera made after their respective breakthrough records. No longer depending on the choppy tempos and percussion-based riffing of the past, guitarist Dan Donegan has made great strides in expanding their sound to include more varied guitar work all around. Take the title track, which moves from a brutal chug to a sweeping chorus that suddenly stops in its tracks and turns into a winding riff that recalls the work of vintage James Hetfield. It’s great stuff, the kind of audible theatrics that makes good heavy metal so visceral and potent. Draiman makes an appreciated and notable effort to stretch his vocal boundaries as well, and his performance is one of the most improved of the band. His clear wail is a more emotive vessel this time, while his gravel-throated bark still adds the trademark harsh element to the sound. All of this adds up to a deeply melodic, at times even beautiful treatment of the genre; the kind of record that makes a metalhead proud to be a metalhead. Highlights include the epic and slightly tragic “Remember,” Draiman’s savage yammering on “Liberate,” the dynamic flip-flopping between razor-sharp aggression and spiritual contemplation on “Rise,” and the understated power ballad “Darkness.” Certain songs do sound a bit too much like other bands for their own good, but this is out of hero worship more than a lack of originality and doesn’t affect anything significantly. In the end, Believe is a satisfying slab of aggression from front to back, filled with enough muscle and brains to render the minor faults irrelevant. Where many of the bands that came out at the same time have proved to be one-album wonders, Believe is proof positive that Disturbed is a force of metal that’s here to stay. [The clean version censors any swearing or questionable language from the album, although this particular disc is lacking in both of those to begin with.] ~ Bradley Torreano, Rovi Performers: Alison Chesley – Cello; Dan Donegan – Keyboards, Guitar; David Draiman – Vocals; Mike Wengren – Drums

Nellyville [Clean]

Nellyville [Clean]

$11.14

Nelly’s debut album, Country Grammar, was a left-field surprise smash hit, racking up a number of hits and turning the Midwestern pop-rapper into an overnight superstar. It’s perhaps little surprise then that his follow-up, Nellyville, sticks to the script. Like Country Grammar, it’s produced almost entirely by newcomer Jason “Jay E” Epperson, and it too relies on catchy, singalong hooks that are more pop than rap. Moreover, there are some clear, clever rewrites here, with “Pimp Juice” in particular relying on the same slow-grooving rhythm that made “Country Grammar” and “E.I.” such jams two summers earlier. Nelly also retains his tough-guy posturing here — he’s no gangsta, nor is he an outright thug, but he is awfully damn cocky and a lot gruffer than your typical teen pop star. All of this makes Nellyville just as good as its predecessor. What makes it two or three notches better, however, are the few occasions where Nelly tries something new — namely on “Hot in Herre,” “Dilemma,” and “Rock the Mic,” three well-calculated, standout moments. The first is a trademark Neptunes production with an infectious hook, tailor-made for radio and club play; the second is a straight, saccharine interpolation of Patti LaBelle’s 1983 hit “Love, Need and Want You” that features a duet with Destiny’s Child singer Kelly Rowland, and is as likely to appeal to those who are old enough to know the original as those who are too young to realize how much of a straight cover this is; and the third is a remix of Beanie Sigel and Freeway’s previously released hit for Roc-a-Fella, and is one of the only pure hip-hop moments here, and a welcome one at that. All of this amounts to a sure-fire pop-rap album that should not only please anyone who enjoyed Country Grammar, it should attract yet more fans who will be drawn in by the few aforementioned standout moments of pop calculation. And that’s not even mentioning the Justin Timberlake feature, which should be a draw in itself for many teen pop fans. [The clean version censors all moments of profanity.] ~ Jason Birchmeier, Rovi Performers: Dani Stevenson – Vocals; Luis Conte – Percussion; Steve Eigner – Guitar

Funhouse [Clean]

Funhouse [Clean]

$10.17

Richard Thompson compared his bumpy marriage to Linda Thompson to a roller coaster named “the Wall of Death” and Pink picks up this carnivalesque thread, calling her troubled relationship with motocross star Carey Hart a Funhouse on her own entry into a long prestigious line of autobiographical divorce albums that stretches back to Blood on the Tracks. Naturally, Funhouse doesn’t have any musical similarities with either Blood or Shoot Out the Lights, but Pink’s divorce album is also emotionally different than either of these classics or Marvin Gaye’s Here, My Dear. Dylan, Thompson, and Gaye layer their albums with self-recriminations and ruminations, niceties that Pink shrugs off in one song, the brooding “I Don’t Believe You.” Other songs allude to the pain of the separation but never in a way that digs deep — the musically fine blues-rocker “Mean” trots out clichés, the delicate spooky Stevie Nicks folk of “Crystal Ball” skirts the divorce, and far from being a primal scream, “Please Don’t Leave Me” surges on a Max Martin hook that pushes away the pain. But as Pink makes clear with the album-opening single “So What” — also co-written with Martin — she’s more than ready to get out of this relationship, thrilled that she’s still a rock star, still drinking in the afternoon. That her enthusiastic hedonism kind of contradicts the letter of her Britney-baiting “Stupid Girls” doesn’t mean that it violates the spirit, as this is still the same Pink, the one who spits out jokes as she rumbles. This snotty stance is second nature to her, so maybe that’s why Funhouse only really clicks when Pink abandons any pretense of mourning her relationship and just cuts loose with galumphing rhythms and schoolyard taunts, the kind that fuel both “So What” and “Bad Influence” and make them instantly indelible. This kind of oversized, obnoxious pop is where Pink’s heart is at — she’s ready to party and as long as the tempo is high, Funhouse is a ride, empowered by her post-divorce freedom. In a way, that does make Funhouse unique among divorce albums, as it’s the first to concentrate on liberation rather than loss — but if she was going to go in this direction, Pink may have been better off not pretending that she’s bothered by the breakup. [Funhouse was also released in a clean version with profanity removed.] ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi Performers: DJ Willrock – Turntables; Kinnda Hamid – Vocals (Background); Stevie Blacke – Strings; Billy Mann – Vocals (Background), Guitar, Keyboards, Guitar (Acoustic), Guitar (Electric); Butch Walker – Vocals (Background), Keybo

Graduation [Clean]

Graduation [Clean]

$12.74

Graduation’s pre-leak talk wasn’t as substantive as it was with Kanye West’s first two albums. As with just about any other artist’s third album, it had to be expected. The College Dropout was one of the most anticipated debuts of the early 2000s, while Late Registration had people wondering why Kanye would feel the need to work so extensively with multi-instrumentalist rock producer Jon Brion (the J Dilla of the chamberlin) and whether or not Kanye’s hubristic tendencies would get the better of it. With Graduation, there was Takashi Murakami’s artwork, a silly first-week sales competition with the decreasingly relevant 50 Cent, and chatter about synthesizers running wild. That was about it, but it all seemed loud and prevalent, due in part to a lack of high-profile rap albums released in 2007. Graduation is neither as bold nor as scattered as The College Dropout, and it’s neither as extroverted nor as sonically rich as Late Registration. Kanye still makes up for his shortcomings as an MC and lyricist by remaining charmingly clumsy, frequently dealing nonsense through suspect rhyme schemes: “I never be picture-perfect Beyoncé/Be light as Al B. or black as Chauncey/Remember him from Blackstreet, he was black as the street was/I never be laid-back as this beat was.” The songs that are thematically distanced, introspective, and/or wary — there are many of them — are, in turn, made more palatable than insufferable. That his humor remains a constant is a crucial aspect of the album, especially considering that most other MCs would sound embittered and hostile if they were handling similar subjects, like haters new and old, being a braggart with a persistent underdog complex, getting wrapped up in spending and flaunting, and the many hassles of being a hedonist. Those who have admired Kanye as a sharp producer while detesting him as an inept MC might find the gleaming synth sprites, as heard most prominently throughout “Flashing Lights” and “Stronger,” to be one of the most glaring deal-breakers in hip-hop history. Though the synthesizer use marks a clear, conscious diversion from Kanye’s past productions, highlights like “I Wonder,” “The Glory,” and “Everything I Am” are deeply rooted in the Kanye of old, using nostalgia-inducing samples, elegant pianos and strings, and gospel choirs. So, no, he’s not dreaming of fronting A Flock of Seagulls or joining Daft Punk. He’s being his shrewd, occasionally foolish, and adventurous self. [A clean edition of the album was also released.] ~ Andy Kellman, Rovi Performers: Omar Edwards – Synthesizer Bass, Fender Rhodes, Piano, Synthesizer; Alexandra Leem – Viola; Alma Fernandez – Viola;

Clean Vent Kit

Clean Vent Kit

$10.99

Two boar?s hair brushes for cleaning in tight places. We?re calling it the Clean Vent Kit , but it?s really a clean everywhere kit. This kit contains two brushes that are invaluable when it comes to cleaning out all the tiny places that dust and crumbs like to hide. The 1? Round Detailing Brush is a 12? long brush with a thick head of genuine boar?s hair bristles. It?s perfect for cleaning out the area at the bottom of both windshields where dust and dirt like to accumulate. The tapered bristles will not scratch the glass, but they are sturdy enough to loosen stubborn crumbs. The long handle makes it easy to reach anywhere in your vehicle without straining. The brush is 1? in diameter so you can quickly whisk away crumbs from the seats and the dust that accumulates at the base of the windows. The Air Vent Brush is a small boar?s hair brush intended for cleaning between air vents, of course, and anywhere else that is too small to adequately clean with the larger brush. These areas might include the stereo face and the clear plastic panel on the dashboard. The wooden handle is 4? long with 2? bristles. The contoured handle makes for comfortable handling and precise cleaning. With the Clean Vent Kit , you can clean areas of your interior that have formerly gone untouched because you lacked the right tools. These brushes are not so small that cleaning is tedious, and they?re not too large to fit in tight places. Short-handled, long-handled, fat, thin ? these brushes are all you need to safely remove dust and dirt wherever they hide.

Too Short keeps the proceedings brief on Get Off the Stage, whose ten tracks, over half of which feature a guest, clock in just over a half-hour. If Short Dog is taking it easy this go-round, at least he sounds good doing it, as he works with a couple of the Bay Area’s best rappers (E-40, Mistah F.A.B.) and a bunch of up-and-comers (Traxamillion, the Pack). At this point in his career, Too Short is more or less going through the motions, doing what needs to be done to make a living for himself and giving up-and-comers a platform to promote themselves alongside a legend. This became clear several years before the release of Get Off the Stage in 2007. Fans will be grateful for yet another latter-day album, especially one with such a fresh sound; everyone else need not pay mind. [A clean version was also released.] ~ Jason Birchmeier, Rovi

Clean Water Filter Kit

Clean Water Filter Kit

$95

Get the Clear Inline Hose Filter Canister and all its accessories in one comprehensive package! The Clean Water Filter Kit includes everything you need for a one-step, in-line filtration system. Unfiltered water from an outdoor spigot can contain a number of things you wouldn?t knowingly put on your vehicle. Yet, without any type of filtration system, you are washing your vehicle in unclean water. Both city water and well water contain minerals and sediment. Minerals cause water spots. Sediment is responsible for micro-marring. Even if you take every possible precaution to protect your vehicle?s paint from swirls and water spots, you?re still leaving it completely vulnerable if you don?t have a water filter. Minerals , particularly calcium and magnesium, are what constitute ?hard water?. Hard water is responsible for water spots, poor-lathering shampoo, and that green ring around your bathtub. The calcium and magnesium actually harden inside pipes (called ?scale?) and on other surfaces, including your vehicle. When you rinse with hard water, you could be dousing your vehicle with hard mineral deposits. The only way to prevent hard water deposits is with a water softener. Sediment is rust or sand that is inside water pipes. A broken water main miles and miles away can allow sand to enter your water supply. Likewise, a little rust anywhere along the water line can flake off into the water. This is why your household faucets have filters. Needless to say, sand and rust hitting your paint finish should be avoided. A filter will remove fine sediment and protect your vehicle as you wash it. The Clean Water Filter Kit makes owning an in-line filter practical for the hobbyist. There?s no guesswork. When you receive the kit, simply connect the included 2 ft hose to the spigot and the hose adapter labeled ?in? on the filter unit. Connect your standard Inline hose to the ?out? side of the filter. Insert either of the included cartridges, screw the base back onto the lid and start washing. The Clean Water Filter Kit includes: 1 Clear Inline Hose Filter Canister Keep your wash water perfectly clean with this easy-to-install, in-line hose filter. It installs between two hoses to filter sediment out of the water or to soften the water, depending on which cartridge you insert. Brass hose-adapter fittings ensure long-lasting performance. The sturdy plastic canister allows you to see when the sediment filter needs changing. The entire unit is 12 inches tall and about 4 ½ inches at its widest point. It includes a wrench to assist in changing the cartridges and a mounting bracket. 1 Sediment Filter Cartridge This cartridge is made of five micron spun poly. It traps fine sediment as the water passes through so that nothing hits your vehicle but pure water. Sediment may include sand, rust, and hard water scale. If you don?t have a hard water problem, this cartridge is all you need to filter your water. 1 Water Softener Filter Cartridge This cartridge neutralizes calci

Exit 13 [Clean]

Exit 13 [Clean]

$12.74

Wrapped in what is possibly the most prog rock sleeve design in hip-hop history, Exit 13 marks LL Cool J’s departure from Def Jam, the pioneering label the MC helped build. Beginning with the blustery and overblown “It’s Time for War,” Exit 13 does include a couple tracks where LL sounds as on fire as ever, usually when his targets are specific rather than general, as on “You Better Watch Me” and “This Is Ring Tone M….” Elsewhere, the album’s tone tilts toward the reactionary in its clear desire to sound just like a standard 2008 mainstream rap album, with unnecessary references to Petron and Cognac and in-your-face evidence that LL really wants you to know he’s not behind the times. Definition of Real [Clean]

Definition of Real [Clean]

$8.47

Not even a year had passed since his debut, but the second time around Florida rapper Plies displays great growth. His lyrics here are sharper than those on his debut with the trials, tribulations, and triumphs he’s experienced living the street life coming through loud and clear. This journey isn’t for the weak-hearted, however, as Plies is an unapologetic beast who — to paraphrase the frightening “Bushes” — didn’t come for your money, but came for your life. “Bushes” is a vivid lesson on how to catch and gut a snitch that could only be written by someone made hard by prison. Even more vicious is “Ol’ Lady”‘s attitude toward women who, in this case, are commodities used to pay off outstanding loans in lieu of cash. This is guys’ night out without any moral compass with one grand exception, “1 Day,” a heartbreaking letter to a friend on lockup where Plies wishes he could take his incarcerated homie “by the day care to see his son play/And go to show him how his baby mama went astray.” Despite its great Patti LaBelle sample, “Somebody (Loves You)” is less convincing and seems forced upon the album like the other radio-friendly tracks — “Bust It Baby, Pt. 2″ with Ne-Yo, and “Please Excuse My Hands” with the Dream. The compelling three-quarters of Definition of Real that seems to have crawled out of the gutter proves that Plies is best off when he does it the ski-mask way. The Blueprint 3 [Clean]

The Blueprint 3 [Clean]

$15.18

When Jay-Z first made a series out of his best album, 2001′s The Blueprint, it became a game of high expectations. The Blueprint of the first volume was Jay-Z as vital as he’d ever been, storming back to the hardcore after a few years of commercial success. The Blueprint²: The Gift & the Curse was a complete turn, a set of half-cocked crossovers, bloated to bursting with guest features that obscured his talents. The Blueprint 3 is somewhere between the two, closer to the vitality and energy of the original but not without the crossover bids and guest features of the latter (albeit much better this time). Kanye West is in the producer’s chair for seven tracks, and it’s clear he was reaching for the same energy level as the original Blueprint (which he produced). “What We Talkin’ About” begins the album with a wave of surging, oppressive synth, while Jay-Z enumerates (with an intriguing lack of detail) what he’s said and what’s been said about him, ending with a nod not to the past but the future (and Barack Obama). West also produced the second, “Thank You,” and while it starts with typical Jay-Hova brio, the last verse piles on the unrelenting criticism of unnamed rappers doomed to weak sales. There’s plenty more lyrical violence to come, but most of the targets are much safer than they were eight years earlier. (Jay doesn’t sound very convincing when he claims in “D.O.A. [Death of Auto-Tune]” that it’s not “politically correct” to rail against one of the most reviled trends in pop music during the 2000s.) From there, he branches out with a calculating type of finesse, drawing in certain demographics via a roster of guests, from Young Jeezy (hardcore) to Drake (teens) to Kid Cudi (the backpacker crowd). The king of the crossovers here is “Empire State of Mind,” a New York flag-waver with plenty of landmark name-dropping that turns into a great anthem with help on the chorus from Alicia Keys. The Blueprint 3 isn’t a one-man tour de force like the first. Jay is upstaged once or twice by his guests, and while the productions are stellar throughout — Timbaland appears three times, and No I.D. gets multiple credits also — it’s clear there’s less on Jay’s mind this time. Not tuned out like on Kingdom Come, but more content with his dominance as a rap godfather in 2009. Port of Miami [Clean]

Port of Miami [Clean]

$12.74

Nicknamed after a notorious drug dealer, William “Rick Ross” Roberts claims to have dealt drugs himself, prior to becoming an MC and gaining the interest of Def Jam president Jay-Z. Rather than merely lure Ross away from his initial label (Slip-N-Slide) with a lucrative contract, Jay-Z linked up with the entire label and netted a distribution deal. “Hustlin’,” a leviathan, trunk-rattling single released a few months prior to Port of Miami — Rick Ross’ official debut album, following a series of mixtapes — informed everyone within earshot about Ross’ modus operandi. He’s Miami’s answer to Atlanta’s Young Jeezy, Def Jam’s breakout artist of 2005. He has a slow, husky drawl, almost always sounding like he should either clear his throat or drink some water, and raps almost exclusively about peddling coke and the lifestyle that comes with the trade. He’s relatively less agile than Jeezy and doesn’t sound nearly as experienced as a rhymer, but his imposing presence and uniquely enunciated pronouncements are alluring, even when his lyrics are random and amount to little more than space-filling, lumpishly projected nonsense — like, say, “Ever seen a fat boy in a big body?/Know you wanna sit bah me, all you do is think bot it/Lease apartments to get kicked ot it/Next day buy a condo to get a kick ot it.” On occasion, he shows promise as a lyricist with flashes of Jeezy or even T.I. when it comes to relating the ups and downs of the life. His pen redeems “Cross That Line,” which features another autopiloted Akon appearance, just like Young Jeezy’s similarly anthemic “Soul Survivor”: “Lil’ brother knowing life illegal/No toys, just playin’ with pipes and needles.” Jay-Z enlists a handful of A-list producers, including Jazze Pha, DJ Toomp, and Cool & Dre, as well as the Runners, who handle nearly a third of the tracks, “Hustlin’” included. [A clean version of the album was also released.] ~ Andy Kellman, Rovi Performers: Fernando Watson – Vocals

Tical 0: The Prequel [Clean]

Tical 0: The Prequel [Clean]

$11.14

Method Man’s third solo work, following 1998′s uneven Tical 2000 (and released a month after Ghostface’s Pretty Toney Album), arrived with many conflicting rumors and circumstances attached to it. On the M2 program Spoke ‘n’ Heard, Meth informed journalist/host Touré that Tical 0 is his best record, and alluded to being boxed in when working with one producer and one sound. Around the same time, the official Wu-Tang website reported that the MC was not pleased with the version Def Jam opted to put out, due to its scant number of RZA productions — one single cut, when an entire record’s worth was allegedly put together throughout the past couple years. Whatever the circumstances might be, there’s no doubt that Tical 0 is less penetrating than Tical 2000, a record that had its ambitions to retain interest during the lulls. This one offers brief bursts of okay-to-decent tracks. The most energizing moments typically come when Meth’s supported by the likes of Busta Rhymes (“What’s Happenin’”) and Ludacris (“Rodeo”), but the productive conveyor belt of guest spots — which chucks out well over a dozen of them, including Missy Elliott, Raekwon, Kardinal Offishall, Chinky (not Chingy), and soon-to-be fellow sitcom star Redman — also weighs down the whole process. Likewise, the list of producers comes pretty close to being lengthier than the list of guest MCs; this makes the record seem unfocused and disjointed, not diverse and well-rounded. Meth seems more clear-headed than ever, possibly a result from his cleaned-up, family-oriented lifestyle. (The lyrical matter, however, does nothing to reflect this change.) His throaty rasp isn’t nearly as doped out as it was a decade prior, but his personality remains an attraction. As an MC, he’s had nothing to prove for quite some time. Give or take a couple hot tracks, this release is not likely to play a significant role in his legacy. [A clean version was also released, with all of the profanities wiped off.] ~ Andy Kellman, Rovi Performers: Mike “Dat Nigga Chav” Chavarria – Guitar; Shawnna – Vocals; Streetlife – Vocals

Burning My Travels Clean

Burning My Travels Clean

$9.58

Rocky Votolato plays solo acoustic guitar songs that never really make it to the point that defines a genre-busting singer/songwriter and instead force him to occupy a less-intense though still beloved realm that also includes acts like Chris Carraba’s Dashboard Confessional. Votolato is also the frontman for the rock act Waxwing, but like Elliott Smith departing Heatmiser, has been focusing most of his attention on polishing his more emotional solo style. The tracks on this disc are heartfelt odes and laments of varying catchiness that can certainly win over a respectable faction of listeners, but lack the breakthrough urgency and enveloping feelings that could make a dent in the bigger picture. Focusing on the acoustic guitar and at times using a subtle backing band, Burning My Travels Clean is a sleepy record that sees the singer get a bit too melodramatic on occasion while also containing some rather respectable melodic songwriting. His country-tinged tunes are actually the most impressive moments on the disc, and as opposed to his previous solo work, Votolato now comes through with solid control over his breathy vocals. This is certainly not the best in the genre, but the songs do have a good deal of heart, and at a number of points it is clear that the singer is creating exactly what he envisioned in his romantic daydreams. It’s not for everyone, but there are plenty of saddened youngsters who will be able to identify with this after only a few moments. ~ Peter J. D’Angelo, Rovi Performers: Kevin – Pedal Steel; Kevin Suggs – Pedal Steel; Rosanne Thomas – Vocals (Background); Cody Votolato – Guitar (Electric); Dan Dean – Drums; James Mendenhall – Piano; Rocky Votolato – Vocals, Guitar; Seth Warren – Violin

Return of the Mac [Clean]

Return of the Mac [Clean]

$14.38

As a member of the hardcore crew Mobb Deep, Prodigy lost some fans the minute they signed with 50 Cent’s G-Unit, and their first full-length for the label, the merely fair Blood Money, didn’t help in the least. Prodigy’s solo album, Return of the Mac, is the return to form that follows with sinister beats, cold rhymes, and most importantly the Alchemist. The Mobb’s long-time producer only handled one cut on Blood Money, but here he’s in charge of every track. Steeped in history, the rapport between rapper and producer creates a world unto itself, one reflected in the album’s artwork, where bravado style and the good life shine in a world of broken concrete and busted windows. The peering out the window could be searching for prey since Prodigy makes it quite clear his moneyed world has come at the expense of others. “Mac 10 Handle” takes a bit of the Geto Boys’ “Mind Playin’ Tricks on Me” and twists it into an N.Y.C. version of Scarface with Tony Montoya weary from all the glorious drugs and with his hand on the gun, paranoid as ever. “You’ve got different colors leaking out you/Like red, yellow, and white/You’ve got some stomach on your Nikes/You got blood on my G-Units” is the horror-show way “Take It to the Top” rolls, and everywhere else there are stories of decay, decline, death, and shoving your way to the front instead of waiting in line. Those bloodied and most definitely comped G-Unit clothes Prodigy mentions is one of the few times life with 50 is in the picture, and hip-hop gossip hounds will note that the label for his solo career is Koch, a “graveyard” according to 50. Whenever Prodigy works with the Alchemist, the results are so haunting it wouldn’t be surprising if Mobb central was located in a graveyard, and even if this is familiar ground, an album so tight in theme and feel is refreshing in an era where most lyricists invite anybody and everybody. The album is short when compared to its contemporaries, clocking in at just under 40 minutes, and about five of those are spent on dialog and Alchemist loops. That’s only a warning for those foolish enough to buy their music by the pound because Return of the Mac is admirable for being succinct and delivering on its title. Ego Trippin' [Clean]

Ego Trippin’ [Clean]

$12.74

The original idea behind what Snoop Dogg considers his ninth album — ignoring all those pesky and shoddy fringe releases — was that the title represented a truly solo effort with no guest shots. As the street date grew closer, the rapper flipped the script and decided that Ego Trippin’ referred to how he “let” people write songs for the album, songs Snoop could rap and sometimes, shockingly, sing. The leadoff good-time single “Sensual Seduction” proved the latter wasn’t a bad idea at all, with Snoop crafting a hooky bedroom track using both a smirk and a throwback Zapp feel. It was a perfect flagship release for an album that tries numerous things but never tries too hard, plus one where the nostalgia is plentiful and perfectly chosen. At the heart of it all are the “overseers” of the album, QDT Muzic, a production crew formed by Snoop along with new jack swing legend Teddy Riley and West Coast hero DJ Quik. This fascinating mix of veterans somehow handles everything from the crooked, crip-walking “Gangsta Like Me” to an unbelievably faithful and fun cover of the Time’s “Cool” with Snoop singing and strutting just like Morris Day. Throwaway moments like the country song — for real — “My Medicine” are balanced by rich and honest moments like “Been Around tha World,” where the rapper reminds listeners he’s actually married and delivers a heartfelt “I’ll be home soon” number. It’s the one time his words are the focus, and while it’s never clear how much Snoop actually wrote, the ghostwriters he’s admitted to hiring have the thug script down and rarely disappoint. What is disappointing is the woefully long track list, the redundant numbers, and the trimming required to keep from drifting off before the majestic closer, “Can’t Say Goodbye” with the Gap Band’s Charlie Wilson, rolls around. Put a quarter of this loose, hangout session to the side and you’ve got a great argument that Snoop’s transition from hungry gangster to laid-back celebrity and idea man is going much better than expected. True Self [Clean]

True Self [Clean]

$11.98

Soil’s third full-length album finds the Chicago-based heavies with a new lead singer. Newcomer A.J. Cavalier — longtime vocalist Ryan McCombs joined Drowning Pool in 2004 — can ape Alice in Chains’ Layne Staley as well as his predecessor, but he reaches deeper and growls heavier, breaking free from much of the post-grunge whining that plagued earlier recordings. It only takes a few seconds into leadoff track “Fight for Life” to get that True Self is a rock heading toward an awfully big glass window. From the blistering “Give It Up” to the dark, “Unforgiven”-era Metallica-esque closer “One Last Song,” Soil fall victim to the simplistic self-loathing that plagued the grunge era only in lyric, and it’s the tight, melodic, and more often than not brutal firestorm behind those words that sends that rock clear through the other side of the building. ~ James Christopher Monger, Rovi Performers: A.J. Too Cool to Care [Clean]

Too Cool to Care [Clean]

$11.18

Rather than stick with the minimal “jerk” sound of their debut, Too Cool to Care suggests the New Boyz bought up all the Taio Cruz, Flo Rida, Asher Roth, and Far East Movement releases they could find and absorbed all the flashiest bits those pop-rap success stories had to offer. What they add to the mix are enough penis jokes to scare all parents, but get past — or embrace — this unholy mix of teen slang and whore talk and the pop-rap duo falls into the “so dumb, it’s fun” category, as if Bill and Ted were spliced with the Neptunes and let loose in the studio. “Magazine Girl” does little but list fashion and music rags while going through all the usual clichés (“You should be on the front page”), but its chorus and crystal-clear ultra-sheen production are both irresistible to those who enjoy polished, teen-aimed R&B. “Meet My Mom” gives 3OH!3 and Cash Cash some competition when it comes to the ridiculous synth pop singalong, and when “girl you look better with” ends up the big hook behind the Chris Brown feature “Better with the Lights Off,” it’s hard to think of a grander moment that the entire snotty-males-in-their-early-twenties movement has yet offered. Hang with the Odd Future crew if you want unredeemable, possibly ironic music with some underground flair, but for questionable morals with mass appeal, Too Cool to Care should have you in its title’s mindset after just a couple spins. ~ David Jeffries, Rovi Performers: Alja Jackson – Vocals (Background); Damon Sharpe – Vocals (Background); The New Royales – Vocals (Background); Bei Maejor – Keyboards, Drums; Bruce Robinson – Guitar; Iyaz – Vocals; Rob Chiarelli – Guitar (Bass); Shanell – Vocals; Uncle Charlie Wilson – Vocals

Speakerboxxx/The Love Below [Clean]

Speakerboxxx/The Love Below [Clean]

$14.37

To call OutKast’s follow-up to their 2000 masterpiece Stankonia the most eagerly awaited hip-hop album of the new millennium may be hyperbole, but not by much. In its kaleidoscopic, deep-fried amalgam of Dirty South, dirty funk, techno, and psychedelia, Stankonia was fearlessly exploratory and giddy with possibilities. It was hard to imagine where the duo was going to go next, but one possibility that few entertained was that Big Boi and Andre 3000 would split apart, each recording an album on his own and then releasing the pair as the fifth OutKast album, Speakerboxxx/The Love Below, in the fall of 2003. Although both albums have their own distinct character, the effect is kind of like if the Beatles issued The White Album as one LP of Lennon tunes, the other of McCartney songs — the individual records may be more coherent, but the illusion that the group can do anything is tarnished. By isolating themselves from each other, Big Boi and Andre 3000 diminish the idea of OutKast slightly, since the focus is on the individuals, not the group. Which, of course, is part of the point of releasing solo albums under the group name — it’s to prove that the two can exist under the umbrella of the OutKast aesthetic while standing as individuals. Thing is, while it would have been a wild, bracing listen to hear these 39 songs mixed up, alternating between Boi and Dre cuts, the two albums do prove that the music can be solo in execution but remain OutKast records through and through. Both records are visionary, imaginative listens, providing some of the best music of 2003, regardless of genre. If conventional wisdom, based on their public personas and previous music, held that Big Boi’s record, Speakerboxxx, would be the more conventional of the two and Andre 3000′s The Love Below the more experimental, that doesn’t turn out to be quite true. From the moment Speakerboxxx kicks into gear with “GhettoMusick” and its relentless blend of old-school 808s and breakneck breakbeats, it’s clear that Boi is ignoring boundaries, and the rest of his album follows suit. It’s grounded firmly within hip-hop, but the beats bend against the grain and the arrangements are overflowing with ideas and thrilling, unpredictable juxtapositions, such as how “Bowtie” swings like big-band jazz filtered through George Clinton, how “The Way You Move” offsets its hard-driving verses with seductive choruses, or how “The Rooster” cheerfully rides a threatening minor-key mariachi groove, salted by slippery horns and loose-limbed wah-wah guitars. It’s a hell of a ride, reclaiming the adventurous spirit of the golden age and pushing it into a new era. By contrast, The Love Below isn’t so much visionary as it is unapologetically eccentric. And as the cocktail jazz pianos that sparkle through the first few songs indicate, it’s not much of a hip-hop album. Instead, Andre 3000 has created the great lost Prince album — the platter that the Purple One recorded somewhere between Arou

Greatest Hits [Clean]

Greatest Hits [Clean]

$12.74

First rule of greatest-hits albums: start things off with a bang, not a song that takes about a minute to get off the ground, and about 80 seconds before the vocals kick in. “Carousel” may be a chronologically accurate way to begin blink-182′s Greatest Hits, yet it gets things off to a slow start — but then again, blink-182 hardly sped out of the gate themselves. It took them a long time to get up to speed — it wasn’t until their third album, 1997′s Dude Ranch, that they developed a flair for sugary pop hooks, as evidenced by that album’s “Dammit,” not just their first big hit, but their first memorable song. It was enough to buy them a ticket to the big leagues and their next album, 1999′s Enema of the State, turned into a blockbuster, thanks to the crossover Top Ten hit “All the Small Things,” an incessantly catchy, irresistible slice of bubblegum-pop that sounded at ease sandwiched between *NSYNC and Britney Spears on Y2K radio. This, as Greatest Hits proves, was both blink-182′s blessing and curse: they had the ability to turn out some great pop singles, but when they missed the mark, they sounded lightweight and disposable. This wasn’t just true of their defiantly stupid party songs, of which there were many; even such brooding, angst-ridden teenage melodramas as “Adam’s Song” seem a little lightweight and transient. Of course, the band was helped neither by its crystal-clear, super-slick production — which was the antithesis of punk — or by the thin, whiny edge of vocalists Mark Hoppus and Tom Delonge — which tended to make even serious themes seem like frivolous adolescent concerns. Over the long run, these two factors tend to undercut whatever snotty charms blink-182 may have had, particularly because their writing tended to be hit or miss, to the extent that even this Greatest Hits is uneven. It may have all their best songs — “Dammit” and “All the Small Things” in particular, plus “Josie,” “What’s My Age Again?,” “The Rock Show,” and “Stay Together for the Kids” — but at 17 songs, including the previously unreleased “Not Now” and a cover of the Only Ones’ “Another Girl Another Planet” taken from the MTV reality series starring drummer Travis Barker and his Playmate wife, this runs a little long. It may have all their charting singles, but its generous length tends to highlight blink-182′s weaknesses instead of their strengths. That said, the group did set the standard for pop-punk’s commercialization at the turn of the millennium, and not only were they better than the sound-alikes that followed, they did have some good tunes, all of which are best heard on this intermittently entertaining collection. Dying to Say This to You [Clean]

$10.38

It can be said with as much certainty that any outside observer can have that the Sounds’ sophomore effort, Dying to Say This to You, has achieved all of its goals and then some. The Swedish indie rock band by all appearances set out to make a fun, high-quality pop/rock record and they did so, brilliantly. This disc has been rendered with creativity and panache, and it features hooky songwriting so compelling that it’s easy to listen to the mere 35 minutes of material (divided into 11 three-minute long, radio-friendly songs) on a continuous loop. Missing Persons comparisons have abounded in reviews of the Sounds, owed mostly to their integrated use of synthesizers, and singer Maja Ivarsson’s sassy delivery (not to mention her iconic look, complete with obligatory Nordic platinum blonde hair), but this doesn’t really do the group justice. Keyboardist Jesper Anderberg’s use of synth on the album finds the instrument’s natural place in indie rock, giving it a chance to evolve rather than languish as a tool for the retro and sarcastic. The cock rocking guitar and an unapologetic rhythm section don’t let up to make way for the synthesizers; they all simply exist in a cohesive arrangement. This, combined with Ivarsson’s spunky voice, brings to life highly danceable tunes that come off as just a little bit punky, despite their strong on-paper adherence to pop sensibilities, which proves that attitude in delivery counts for a lot in the overall feel of a record. Moods of individual songs do vary, from the pissy vibe on “Queen of Apology” to the wry and earnest ballad “Night After Night,” which manages to evoke a sense of vulnerability amid the just-out-for-a-good-time songs that surround it on the album. The tone of the disc as a whole, however, is consistent and clear, leaving no question that the Sounds have found their voice. ~ Cammila Albertson, Rovi Performers: Annie Stocking – Vocals (Background); Jeanie Tracy – Vocals (Background); Melora Creager – Cello; Felix Rodriguez – Guitar; Fredrik Nilsson – Drums; Jesper Anderberg – Keyboards; Maja Ivarsson – Vocals; Micah Gaugh – Saxophone

Around the time the reggaeton gold rush of 2003-2005 was running dry, and a great many critics were eager to write off the style as a next-big-thing phenomenon that burned itself out, along came Calle 13. The Puerto Rican duo was a revelation: a reggaeton act whose appeal extended beyond clubs and mixtapes, one whose music was as engaging intellectually as it was sonically. Granted, Calle 13 was a reggaeton act that wasn’t genuinely reggaeton. These guys were presenting an alternative style, one that was purposefully different — when so many other reggaeton acts were parroting the mannerisms of Daddy Yankee and Don Omar in hopes of cashing in on the gold rush, Calle 13 blazed a trail of their own. They didn’t catch on at first, but once they did, slowly but steadily, they were showered with acclaim, including three Latin Grammys, and they enjoyed surging popularity, especially among the MTV demographic. All of this success opened a lot of doors for the duo, as Residente (the vocalist) accepted invitations to work with Nelly Furtado and Alejandro Sanz and Visitante (the producer) with Shakira and Beyoncé on their “Beautiful Liar” collaboration — not bad for a reggaeton act. The thing is, Calle 13 is so much more than a reggaeton act, something they seem to stress on their second album, Residente o Visitante. Sure, reggaeton is the basis for the music of Residente and Visitante, but they synthesize it with a wide-ranging assortment of styles and sounds, including opera (“Intro”), tango (“Tango del Pecado”), bossa nova (“Un Beso de Desayuno”), electric guitar (“Llégale a Mi Guarida”), and cumbia (“La Cumbia de los Aburridos”). More than anything, though, rap and electronica are clear touchstones for Calle 13, as Residente is a gifted rapper who matches Eminem in terms of wit and playfulness while Visitante is a similarly gifted producer who creates multi-layered tracks that rarely sound alike. As expected, Residente o Visitante is a significantly more advanced album than Calle 13, given all that happened in the time between. For one, the guys are much more willing to experiment stylistically. The handful of collaborations — true collaborations, not phoned-in vocal tracks — seem to have been a vehicle for experimentation: the lead single, “Tango del Pecado,” is a clever narrative graced instrumentally by the Bajofondo Tango Club; “Sin Exagerar” is a crazed runaway rap showcase teaming Residente with his labelmate Tego Calderón; “Mala Suerta con el 13″ is an impressive boy-versus-girl face-off with rapper Mala Rodríguez; and “Pal Norte” features Cuban rappers Orishas. These aren’t necessarily the best songs. They just happen to be the most interesting, because of the experimentation — and they’re front-loaded, kicking off Residente o Visitante wildly. As the album nears its 15-track close, it’s just Residente and Visitante, the mood turns darker, and the style turns increasingly away from reggaeton and toward a more general urban-alternative styl

Give Justin Timberlake credit for this: he has ambition. He may not have good instincts and he may bungle his execution, but he sure has ambition and he has ever since he was the leading heartthrob in *NSYNC. He drove the teen pop quintet to the top of the charts, far exceeding their peers the Backstreet Boys, and when the group could achieve no more, he eased into a solo career that earned him great sales and a fair amount of praise, largely centered on how he reworked the dynamic sound of early Michael Jackson at a time when Jacko was so hapless he turned away songs that later became JT hits, as in the Neptunes-propelled “Rock Your Body.” That song and “Cry Me a River” turned his 2002 solo debut, Justified, into a blockbuster, which in turn meant that he started to be taken seriously — not just by teens-turned-adult, but also some rock critics and Hollywood, who gave him no less than three starring roles in the wake of Justified. Those films all fell victim to endless delays — Alpha Dog aired at Sundance 2006 but didn’t see release that year, nor did Black Snake Moan, which got pushed back until 2007, leaving Edison Force, a roundly panned Shattered Glass-styled thriller that sneaked out onto video, as the first Timberlake film to see the light of day — but even if silver screen stardom proved elusive, Timberlake didn’t seem phased at all, and his fall 2006 album FutureSex/LoveSounds proves why: he’d been pouring all his energy into his second album to ensure that he didn’t have a sophomore slump. If Michael Jackson was the touchstone for Justified, Prince provides the cornerstone of FutureSex/LoveSounds, at least to a certain extent — Timbaland, Timberlake’s chief collaborator here (a move that invites endless, and endlessly funny “Timbaland/Timberlake” jokes), does indeed spend plenty of time on FutureSex refurbishing the electro-funk of Prince’s early-’80s recordings, just like he did with Nelly Furtado’s Loose, and Timberlake’s obsession with sex does indeed recall Prince’s carnivorous carnality of the early ’80s. But execution is everything, particularly with Timberlake, and if the clumsy title of FutureSex/LoveSounds wasn’t a big enough tip-off that something is amiss here — the clear allusion to Speakerboxxx/The Love Below would seem like an homage if there weren’t the nagging suspicion that Timberlake didn’t realize that the OutKast album bore that title because it was two records in one — a quick listen to the album’s opening triptych proves that Timberlake doesn’t quite bring the robotic retro-future funk he’s designed to life. Hell, a quick look at the titles of those first three songs shows some cracks in the album’s architecture, as they reveal how desperate and literal Timberlake’s sex moves are. Each of the three opening songs has “sex” sandwiched somewhere within its title, as if mere repetition of the word will magically conjure a sex vibe, when in truth it has the opposite effect: it makes it seem that Timberlake

Come now, let us all genuflect before Lamb of God, for to them we owe our metal souls. In the fat rat-infested, decrepit tenement called Heavy Rock Manor, the Virginia-based shock unit is one of the few groups striving to keep the power on and the hallways clear of gluttonous rap-rock/post-grunge False Marias. Yes, yes, Ashes of the Wake arrives via Epic Records, but this only will inflame the ire of the ignorant. For the rest of us, Lamb’s ascendance to the majors melts a little more of the crap rock golden calf. Where previous efforts were fully automatic hot LZs, they were also slightly muddled for the very same reason. They fired in all directions. With Ashes, producer Machine has sharpened the corner of every riff and tightened the turns on classicist metal gallops. Best of all, Randy Blythe’s furious yawp is more focused. Rather than simply being another scary voice shouter, Blythe becomes Lamb of God’s threshold of pain conduit. “Laid to Rest” begins with his measured statements — “If there was a single day I could live…I’d trade all the others away” — flanked by the at-odds guitars of Willie Adler and Mark Morton. But then Blythe unleashes his demonic throat, and the guitars leap over and across one another like basilisks on a prowl for ibex kids. “Hourglass” offers more, its interlocking rhythms and breakdowns harking to the dark lands of Scandinavia. But it doesn’t go all the way there. This is American metal, after all, meaning that, in the tradition of Pantera and Poison the Well, large-form grandiosity is sacrificed in favor of a muscularity derived from hardcore and hard living. The aptly named “Omerta” begins with that code’s reading. “Whoever appeals to the law against his fellow man is either a fool or a coward.” It proceeds to stalk slowly into gear, the sound of a wounded man coming after his would-be murderers. “Blood of the Scribe” refits death metal’s cadence for a leaner, meaner era; the less than subtle “Now You’ve Got Something to Die For” offers the kids a new unifying chant, not to mention some spectacularly martial instrumental breaks. Drummer Chris Adler really shines here, with Machine ensuring his snare is a steely bullet fired by viscous double bass gunpowder. Instrumental freaks will swallow the title track whole. Guest soloists Alex Skolnick (Testament) and Chris Poland (Megadeth) each get a taste, alongside Morton and Adler — their insane fretting sounds like a city exploding. That’s what Lamb of God does for us, what it does for metal in the 21st century. With the genre getting clogged by PVC goofs and Alice in Chains impersonators, Lamb of God balances the equation of power, rage, tradition, and craft. It kills the filler. Double Up [Clean]

Like most of its predecessors, R. Kelly’s eleventh album is stuffed to the gills, with 18-plus songs clocking in at 76 minutes (or longer, depending on which bonus track[s] your edition includes.) And if Double Up is, inevitably, far from flawless, the level of novelty and listenability Kelly manages to sustain for that duration is quite a feat. It makes this his best full-length in years — arguably his best of the decade — especially when you consider that its high points — most notably the singles “I’m a Flirt [Remix]” and “Same Girl” — rank among the licentious Chicagoan’s very finest. Yes, Kelly’s familiar, almost cartoonishly overstated brand of sex-obsessed misogyny is as rampant here as his increasingly eccentric humor — more so than ever, on both counts. So if you’re not of a disposition to stomach the 40-year-old (whose still-pending child pornography trial was set to commence several months after the album’s release, before being delayed yet again) boasting about his plot to seduce a pair of “freaky” first cousins for a ménage à trois (in the title track), or warning listeners to steer their girlfriends clear of his restlessly prowling libido (in “Flirt”: “the moral of this story is ‘cuff your chick’”), this could be a painfully long and humorless listen, or worse. But cut the man a little slack, at least on record — or allow him the indulgence of his already comically blatant perversity (at least he doesn’t present himself as someone who expects to be taken very seriously) and it’s either an absurd explosion of standard R&B tropes (nightclub bangers, baby-makin’ slow jams, overwrought breakup songs) or simply a treasure trove of questionable-taste comedy gold. Actually, those aforementioned scenarios are just the tip of the iceberg, strictly routine in comparison to extended X-rated metaphors — in the vein of “In the Kitchen” or “Ignition” (the original, not the remix) — involving jungle animals (the brilliantly nutty, if somewhat misleadingly titled “The Zoo”), dessert (“Sweet Tooth”), and interstellar travel (“Sex Planet”), or hammy, convoluted mini-epics like “Same Girl,” the one-sided argument “Real Talk,” and the multi-player melodrama “Best Friend” (the closest this album comes to the preposterous serialized histrionics of the apparently endless “Trapped in the Closet” saga.) Subject matter aside (lets not even get into the incongruously inspirational Virginia Tech paean “Rise Up”), there’s no denying that Kells is in top form production-wise. His occasional attempts at trend-jumping have somewhat mixed results — the turgid metal guitars of “Rock Star,” featuring Kid Rock; the menacing Southern-style synths of “Rollin’”; the fine but innocuous Caribbean-tinged “Freaky in the Club” — though it doesn’t help that these are also the album’s least inspired moments conceptually and melodically. On the other hand, he cops 2007′s production gimmick du jour, vocodered R&B vocals (à la T-Pain), to excellent effect o

St. Anger [Clean]

St. Anger [Clean]

Metallica’s first new material in over five years arrives after a flurry of non-musical activity that included a much-publicized spat over Internet file sharing, the departure of bassist Jason Newsted, and a lengthy stay in rehab for James Hetfield that suspended the recording of a new album indefinitely. Hetfield returned to the fold in late 2001. Still without a bass player, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett, and their newly sober frontman recruited longtime producer Bob Rock to man Newsted’s spot, and creation of the album commenced in May 2002. St. Anger arrived a year later as a punishing, unflinching document of internal struggle — taking listeners inside the bruised yet vital body of Metallica, but ultimately revealing the alternately torturous and defiant demons that wrestle inside Hetfield’s brain. St. Anger is an immediate record. Written largely in the first person, it never warns of impending doom, doesn’t struggle with claustrophobia, and has care neither for religion’s safety nor its hypocrisy. (The religious symbolism of its title and artwork seems only to function as a metaphorical device.) Lacking the heavy metal baggage of these past themes, Metallica is left to ponder only itself and its singer’s psychosis, and delivers its diagnosis on slabs of speed metal informed with years of innovation and texture. The record exists as it ends. As the lockstep thrash of the eight-plus minute “All Within My Hands” tumbles toward its final gasp, Hetfield is explicit in his aims. “I will only let you breathe my air that you receive,” he seethes. “Then we’ll see if I let you love me.” Ulrich’s drums sputter in fits and starts, but the guitars are already dying, shutting down as Hetfield stabs at the microphone. “Kill Kill Kill Kill Kill,” he screams, and you have to check the wall for a splatter radius. It’s a brutal, ugly end to an album that switches on like a bare light bulb in an underground cave. It blasts each corner with harsh, unfiltered light for 75 minutes, until the bulb is shattered with a combat boot, leaving disquieting after-images exploding on the backs of your eyelids.”Frantic” is driven forth by a snare drum that just may be made of iron, Hammett and Hetfield’s guitars eschewing separate parts in favor of a roaring tag-team approach. A hint of the band’s mid-’90s nod to alternative drifts in during a bridge, but it’s quickly swallowed alive by the song’s muscular groove, never to be heard from again. “St. Anger,” the single, marks the first appearance of a vocal technique that lurks in the shadows throughout the album. As Hetfield groans, “I feel my world shake/It’s hard to see clear,” he seems manipulated by an unseen force, flickering like bad reception. It’s unsettling, and startlingly effective. Hetfield’s psyche is on trial throughout, and though he often expresses confusion and anger over his struggle (“Some Kind of Monster” and especially “Dirty Window,” in which he becomes both judge and jury), the mechanistic rhythms of the

8 Diagrams [Clean]

With anticipation so high it caused debate not only among fans but among the group itself, Wu-Tang Clan’s fifth studio record, 8 Diagrams, found itself at the center of attention as 2007 wound down. First there was the announcement of the successful obtainment of the Beatles’ “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” sample (which was later corrected to “interpolation,” as it was actually played by Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante with help from George Harrison’s son, a Wu enthusiast himself, Dhani). Then Raekwon did a highly publicized online interview in which he accused the RZA of taking a dictatorial stance regarding the shape of the album, calling him a “hip-hop hippie” who was moving the Clan in the wrong direction. Then Ghostface Killah followed suit, also protesting the timing of the release (it had been set for December 4, the same day The Big Doe Rehab was to come out, but was then pushed back a week). Finally, RZA responded, diplomatically, thoughtfully, respecting the opinions of the dissenting MCs but standing by his own work. There’s reason for his confidence. Nothing RZA does is haphazard, and 8 Diagrams is clearly something he’s put a lot of thought and energy into. It’s beautifully, impeccably produced, from the soundtrack strings and horns of “Rushing Elephants” and “Unpredictable” to the philosophical samples and guitars that are interspersed throughout — it’s a mood record more than anything else, with no clear-cut single or fan favorites, the kind of thing that deepens and grows with every listen. Suffice it to say, it’s probably not the album anyone would predict from the group after a six-year break, but it is truly RZA’s crowning achievement, the result of both his years with the Wu and in Hollywood, intricate, dark, reflective, and gorgeous. These same qualities, however, can be used to support the less-than-enthusiastic response from Raekwon and Ghostface and fans of the early hard-hitting Wu-Tang of 36 Chambers (which, ironically — or not — was not the universally revered masterpiece it is now when it came out in 1993). The beats are certainly not something either usually raps over, and their moodiness and heavy attention to melody don’t always fit their edgier flows. Still, both manage to contribute some pretty great verses — Ghost on the Easy Mo Bee co-produced “Take It Back” (“We gonna have a ball/Might as well have a testicle”) and “The Heart Gently Weeps,” a song which also features the Chef at his finest, strange violent imagery and all — and do nothing to discredit themselves, a repercussion Raekwon hinted at. In fact, all eight MCs are in fine form here. U-God, Masta Killa, and Inspectah Deck are able balance their old-school deliveries with the 23rd century beats, GZA is suitably genius-like (“Hold you for a ransom note/Goliath cutting David’s throat/Grab your vests, abandon boat/And leave you out at sea to float,” he spits on the excellent “Stick Me for My Riches”), RZA esoteric and serious (and the only one

Be [Clean]

Be [Clean]

$11.14

Electric Circus cost and won Common some fans. It was very exploratory, especially so for a rap album released in 2002, containing developments — some of which soared, some of which sank — that few longtime followers could have foreseen. Listeners either felt Common was picking up fresh, new inspirations, or that he was just being distracted by a whole lot of ill-fitting nonsense. With Be, it seems the MC has realized that not every album that’s sprawling and eclectic is as good as Electric Ladyland or Songs in the Key of Life. More notably, he might’ve been struck with the fact that a high percentage of excellent albums are around 40 minutes in length and are built on a unified sound. Be is highly concentrated, containing 11 songs and involving two producers and a small number of guests. It’s a 180 degree turn from Electric Circus, and in a bizarre way it’s both a progression and a back-to-basics move. Kanye West and Dilla are key to the album’s steadiness, rooting the sound in ’70s soul and soul-jazz. That’s no shakeup, but the two producers deserve some form of award for stringing together a consistent sequence of productions that is never monotonous, dull, or all that flashy. Even lead single “The Corner,” heard well before Be’s release, falls into the fabric of the album on first listen, as if that were where it belonged all along. Lyrically, Common comes back down to Earth — the narratives are sharp as ever, the gripes are more like observations than screeds, and the eccentricities need to be teased out rather than swatted away. Be isn’t likely to be referred to by anyone as groundbreaking, but it’s one of Common’s best, and it’s also one of the most tightly constructed albums of any form within recent memory. [The album was also made available in a clean version.] ~ Andy Kellman, Rovi Performers: A-Trak – Scratching; DJ Dummy – Scratching; Derrick Hodge – Bass (Acoustic); James Poyser – Strings, Keyboards; John Legend – Vocals (Background); John Mayer – Vocals (Background); Kanye West – Vocals (Background), Keyboards; Mister Lonnie & The Kids Lynn – Vocals (Background); Karriem Riggins – Drums, Percussion; Num Amun-Tehu – Percussion

Deluxe Clean Water Filter Kit

Deluxe Clean Water Filter Kit

$139.99

This 2-step filtration system prevents two of the most common culprits of micro-marring. You wouldn?t rub sand on your paint finish; why would you wash your vehicle in sediment and hard water? The Deluxe Clean Water Filter Kit includes everything you need to set up a simple two-step filtration system for car washing. A one-step, in-line filter will remove one of these problems, but what if your water has both sediment and hard water? Well water almost certainly contains sediment and minerals because it is not filtered through a water treatment plant. But even city water can contain both sediment and hard water. That?s because many water treatment plants add lime to the water to raise the pH in order to spur the chemical process that removes debris from the water. Lime adds to hard water. In short, most of us need a two-part filtration system to ensure that the water coming out of the garden hose is truly clean. The Deluxe Clean Water Filter System is a comprehensive two-step, in-line filter system that both removes sediment and softens the water. This one package is all you need to ensure you?re washing your vehicle in clean, soft water. There?s no point in preventing water spots if you?re using the wrong towels! We?ve included two top quality Cobra microfiber towels to ensure that your paint finish is safe from scratches while you detail. The Deluxe Clean Water Filter System includes: 2 Clear Inline Hose Filters Keep your wash water perfectly clean with these easy-to-install, in-line hose filters. Put a sediment filter cartridge into one unit and a water softener cartridge in the second unit. This two-step system cleans and then softens the water as it travels from the water source to its final destination. Brass hose-adapter fittings ensure long-lasting performance. The sturdy plastic housing allows you to see when the sediment filter needs changing. Each unit is 12 inches tall and about 4 ½ inches at its widest point. Each includes a wrench to assist in changing the cartridges and a mounting bracket. 1 Sediment Filter Cartridge This cartridge is made of five micron
