Works Live $45.98 In 1977, after three years’ time off working on various solo projects — which were to have culminated with a trio of solo albums — Emerson, Lake & Palmer reunited to release Works, Vol. 1, a double LP containing the best of the solo works plus a side of group-conceived pieces. All in all, it was the most ambitious and wide-ranging body of music they’d ever released, and was followed by the more modestly proportioned but still successful Works, Vol. 2 in November of that year, and a tour that fall and winter; in keeping with the albums that spawned it, the concerts initially featured a 90-piece orchestra supporting the trio. They weren’t able to keep the orchestra for more than a handful of shows before the money ran out, and the group spent the rest of the tour working as a trio to pay off what was owed, but they recognized the importance of those performances with the orchestra and saw to it that one of them, at least, was captured properly and professionally — and unlike Welcome Back My Friends to the Show That Never Ends, their 1974 live album, which had its share of technical flaws, this time around the recording was state-of-the-art. Ironically, what they captured was almost an embarrassment of riches for their record label at the time — by 1979, the brand of progressive rock represented by ELP was falling out of favor with critics and the public under the four-way assault of punk, new wave, power pop, and disco, and all Atlantic Records felt comfortable releasing at the time was a paltry single live LP, entitled In Concert. The advent of the CD era and the revival of the trio in the 1990s led to the latter’s reissue and expansion into this two-CD set, released in late 1993. Recorded at the Montreal Olympic Stadium (pictured on the cover of both albums), it features the trio performing with a symphony orchestra. Technically, it’s a beautiful album, avoiding most of the pitfalls and sonic shortcomings of their earlier concert ventures on record, and the repertory is the widest ranging of their entire history, reaching back to “Knife Edge” (from their first album) and reviving “Abaddon’s Bolero,” an instrumental from Trilogy, plus a brace of tracks of all proportions from both Works albums, among them Keith Emerson’s “Piano Concerto” and his more modestly conceived “Tiger in the Spotlight” and his rendition of Scott Joplin’s “Maple Leaf Rag,” Greg Lake’s “C’Est la Vie,” “Watching Over You,” “Closer to Believing,” and his interpretation of “Show Me the Way to Go Home” — all in versions distinctly superior to their studio renditions — as well as the reconceived “Tank.” Prog rock fans will be delighted by “Pictures at an Exhibition,” here shorter, tighter, and obviously more symphonic than the group’s 1971 recording. There is a real sense listening to this album, however — despite some light and disarming moments such as “Tiger in the Spotlight,” and good, cohesive playing throughout — that you’re really listening not so much to a

The andrenalized music feeds through the songs with big, thumping beats, guitar riffs shredded by Cameron Baines’ stop-and-go tactics, and the soaring vocals and harmonies that have just a hint of the ’60s about them — Jan & Dean with body piercing and mohawks. Promised Works $10.38 The For Carnation valued quality over quantity: they released just two EPs and a full-length album over the course of six years. The band’s slim discography reflects Brian McMahan and company’s painstaking, extremely restrained approach to making music, which straddled the border of slowcore and post-rock. The comparisons the band drew to McMahan’s former group, the legendary Slint, and to other former Slint members’ projects like Gastr del Sol, didn’t really appreciate the For Carnation’s sketches and studies in tension, release, and silence in their own right. The whispers and wide-open spaces in their songs were uniquely warm and intimate, drawing listeners in; if and when the guitars and vocals swelled, they had even more impact than they would’ve if the songs’ dynamics were more typical. Promised Works, which collects the For Carnation’s Matador EPs Fight Songs and Marshmallows, plays just as well as a full-length as the band’s lone, self-titled album does. The tracks from Fight Songs prove that the For Carnation had their musical strategy mapped out from the start. “Get and Stay Get March”‘s circular, sleepwalking coda, decorated with gentle strings chirping birds, is equally gorgeous and mysterious, while “How I Beat the Devil”‘s false starts just add to the song’s charm once its giddy guitars finally kick in. The songs from the For Carnation’s second EP Marshmallows go darker and sparer, and while “Salo” might be too insular and meandering for its own good, tracks like the pretty, fragmented vignette “On the Swing” and the sweet-yet-spooky “Imyr, Marshmallows” show the range within the band’s seemingly limited palette. They push even further with “I Wear the Gold”‘s woozy guitars and intricate polyrhythms and the outstanding “Winter Lair,” a study in whispers and guitars as spare as bare trees that captures snowy desolation with eerie perfection. Likewise, Promised Works captures the subtle, almost peripheral beauty of the For Carnation’s small, but very close to perfectly formed body of work. ~ Heather Phares, Rovi

Yet in spite of the sumptuous sonorities he produces, Theofanidis seems caught up in late-romantic grandiosity. His arching melodies and swelling chords are impressive sounding, but the music is predictable and less than ecstatic at the end. Higdon’s blue cathedral is an atmospheric rhapsody of considerable charm and evocative color. The only thing holding this piece back is its fast middle section, which merely provides contrast. Its headlong charge breaks the delicate ambience Higdon carefully established at the beginning, and ultimately turns the work’s best music into a frame for its rather ordinary material. In the end, Samuel Barber’s Symphony No. 1, a richly scored work from his youth, and Aaron Copland’s evergreen, Appalachian Spring, are the most satisfying works this disc has to offer. Unfortunately for Theofanidis and Higdon, comparisons inevitably will be drawn, and their pieces may seem poorer next to these accomplished works. Although “52nd Street” takes a moment or two to find its niche, Randy Brecker’s trumpet recalls Miles Davis backed by a Latin or salsa flavor thanks to the conga playing from Giovanni Hidalgo. The fluidity is its crowning glory, as Bob Mintzer joins the fray on bass clarinet, giving it a low yet sophisticated style. The low-key atmosphere only adds to the luster of the opening song, although Brecker’s solo two-thirds of the way in isn’t entirely outstanding, sliding up and down the scales with average results. However, the polyrhythmic verve oozing on the catchy and infectious “East Harlem” works brilliantly, while Chesky jumps off into a rapid yet meticulous piano solo prior to Brecker taming the number down. “Bronxville” ensues, but by this time the listener senses this is basically a 70-minute song divided into nine sonic boroughs, as some of the early song titles would suggest. This particular effort is given more air to breathe and thrive upon, with the bassline having more of an integral role. The group changes gears slightly on the funkier and deliberate “Hell’s Kitchen,” bringing to mind instrumentals by Morphine as the song is wrapped tightly around the anchor of its rhythm section before slowing to a crawl. “Acoustic Metal” gets things back to a lovely and polished framework as Brecker takes the song by its proverbial horns, while Chesky accents the core of the effort. But “N.Y. Cool” might be too cool for its own good, wallowing in certain areas while shining in other instances, albeit fleetingly. One wonders how on earth that could possibly be, since the evidence presented on this delightful, bubbling collection (in spite of its title, this isn’t Brown’s complete recorded works, documenting instead sessions she did between March and June in 1935) shows an artist impossible to ignore. Known as the Queen of Stride Piano, Brown combined Fats Waller-like stride piano with a fragile, wispy, and yet joyously compelling vocal style, creating a fascinating body of work that manages to be equal parts blues, jazz, and pop (and sometimes all three at once). The sessions presented here, for which Decca assembled one of the best house bands the label ever had, one that featured guitar wizard Perry Botkin and a young Gene Krupa on drums, show Brown at her absolute best. Every track is a delight, but among the highlights featured here are the vibrant and infectious “Mama Don’t Want No Peas an’ Rice an’ Coconut Oil,” the classic reefer song “The Stuff Is Here and It’s Mellow,” the romping “Pelican Stomp,” where Brown shows off her considerable piano skills, and the wry “Give a Broken Heart a Break.” Even the alternate takes (and there are several here) are fascinating.
