African Playground

African Playground

$11.98

If Putumayo wasn’t marketing African Playground as a compilation of children’s music, some non-African listeners would have no idea that the material is aimed at kids (or is at least kid-friendly). They would know that African Playground is a good to excellent collection of African pop, but they wouldn’t associate the songs with kids because it lacks the sophomoric qualities one associates with American children’s music; the material sounds playful and lighthearted, but it doesn’t sound sophomoric. Much of the children’s music that comes from the United States is unlistenable if you’re over the age of 12; it tends to talk down to kids and underestimates their intelligence. But that isn’t the case on this Afro-pop CD, which could be described as “children’s music with a brain.” The term African pop can mean a wide variety of things; in the case of African Playground, African pop is pop music from black Africa — and that includes West Africa and Central Africa as well as Southern Africa. The compilation doesn’t get into the Middle Eastern-sounding pop of Egypt, Libya, Algeria, or Morocco, which are all part of Arabic North Africa. Instead, the material comes from countries that range from Senegal (Vieux Diop’s “Sing LO-LO”) and the Congo (Mose Se ‘Fan Fan”s “Hello Hello”) to South Africa (the Mahotella Queens’ “Mbube” and Bakithi Kumalo’s “Sangoma”). Some of the lyrics are in English, although most of them are in various African languages. Again, African Playground is child-friendly without sounding childish, and world music enthusiasts who are 30, 40, or 50 will find it to be a substantial, intelligent collection of modern, western-influenced Afro-pop. ~ Alex Henderson, Rovi

The African Queen

The African Queen

$23.96

After years of wooing director John Huston via good reviews, film critic James Agee was given a chance to write the screenplay for a Huston picture. Adapted from a novel by C.S. Forester, The African Queen stars Humphrey Bogart in his Oscar-winning portrayal of Charlie Allnut, the slovenly, gin-swilling captain of a tramp steamer called the African Queen, which ships supplies to small East African villages during World War I. Katharine Hepburn plays Rose Sayer, the maiden-lady sister of a prim British missionary, Rev. Samuel Sayer (Robert Morley). When Germans invade and Samuel dies, Allnut offers to take Rose back to civilization. She can’t tolerate his drinking or bad manners; he isn’t crazy about her imperious, judgmental attitude. However it does not take long before their passionate dislike turns to love. Together the disparate duo work to ensure their survival on the treacherous waters and devise an ingenious way to destroy a German gunboat. The African Queen may well be the perfect adventure film, its roller-coaster storyline complemented by the chemistry between its stars. The profound difficulties inherent in filming on location in Africa have been superbly documented by several books, including one written by Katharine Hepburn. Screenwriter Peter Viertel (who worked, on an uncredited basis, on the script of this film – assisting with some of the dialogue) incorporated some of the African Queen anecdotes in his roman a clef about a Huston-like director/adventurer, White Hunter, Black Heart. Hal Erickson, Rovi

The African Adventurers

The African Adventurers

$44.65

Peter Capstick has been hailed as the adventure-writing successor to Hemingway and Ruark. Only Capstick can write action as cleanly and suspensefully as the best of his predecessors (Sports Illustrated). This long-awaited sequel to Death in the Silent Places (1981) brings to life four turn-of-the-century adventurers and the savage frontiers they braved. Frederick Selous, a British hunter, naturalist, and soldier, rewrote the history books with his fearless treks deep into the Dark Continent. English game ranger Constantine Iodine Ionides saved Tanganyikan villages from man-eating lions and leopards. He also gained lasting fame for his uncanny ability to capture black mambas, cobras, Gaboon vipers, and other deadly snakes. The dashing Brit Johnny Boyes who gained the chieftainship of the Kikuyu tribe with sheer bravado and survived the ferocious battles and ambushes of intertribal warfare. And Scottish ex-boxer, Jim Sutherland, one of the best ivory hunters who ever lived. His tracking skills and stamina afoot became the stuff of African hunting legend. If you are a Capstick fan, you'll relish The African Adventurers, his eleventh book. Once again he delivers the kind of chilling stories that Hemingway only heard second-hand…with a flair and style that Papa himself would admire (Guns& Ammo). The author's pungent wit and his authenticity gained from years in the bush make this quartet of vintage heroics an unforgettable return to the silent places.

The African Americans (Hardcover)

The African Americans (Hardcover)

$130.75

As a result of the slave trade, through which the vast majority of African immigrants were involuntarily transported to America, the history of African Americans is one rooted in controversy and strife. After the Civil War when Abraham Lincoln abolished the institution of slavery, African Americans began the struggle for civil rights and social and cultural equality in the United States, a struggle that continues to this day despite the gains of the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. The election of Barack Obama in 2008 to the American presidency is hopeful evidence, however, of the amalgamation of African American interests in the country`s political system. The African Americans explores this particular ethnic group, presenting a remarkable array of valuable information, including entertainment, work, education, and the contributions and conflicts of African Americans to society. This informative new volume details their social history, customs, and traditions and is enhanced by further reading lists, box features, black-and-white photographs, and more.

The African-American Odyssey (Paperback)

The African-American Odyssey (Paperback)

$195.34

More than any other text, The African-American Odyssey illuminates the central place of African Americans in U.S. history – not only telling the story of what it has meant to be black in America, but also how African-American history is inseparably weaved into the greater context of American history and vice versa.   Told through a clear, direct, and flowing narrative by leading scholars in the field, The African-American Odyssey draws on recent research to present black history within broad social, cultural, and political frameworks.  From Africa to the Twenty-First Century, this book follows their long, turbulent journey, including the rich culture that African Americans have nurtured throughout their history and the many-faceted quest for freedom in which African Americans have sought to counter oppression and racism.  This text also recognizes the diversity within the African-American sphere — providing coverage of all class and of women and balancing the lives of ordinary men and women with the accounts and actions of black leaders and individuals.

Catherine Squires introduces the reader to the varied ways in which Black Americans have navigated cultural, political, and economic obstacles both to make their own media and to critique mainstream media. Synthesizing the work of social scientists, historians, cultural critics, as well as comments from audience members and media producers, African Americans and the Media gives readers a lively entry point to classic and contemporary studies of Black Americans and mass media. Across the chapters, readers follow African Americans` struggles to harness the power of print, broadcasting, film, and digital media, through five main themes which are woven through the book: representation, circulation, innovation, audience and responsibility. Taking in examples as diverse as Blaxploitation films, the work of 20th Century black activist journalists such as Ida B. Wells and A. Philip Randolph, and popular television such as The Cosby Show, this book will be essential reading for all students and scholars of media and communications and African American studies.

African-American Art (Paperback)

African-American Art (Paperback)

$44.53

From its origins in early eighteenth century slave communities to the end of the twentieth century, African-American art has made a vital contribution to the art of the United States. African-American Art provides a major reassessment of the subject, setting the art in the context of the African-American experience. Here, Patton discusses folk and decorative arts such as ceramics, furniture, and quilts alongside fine art, sculptures, paintings, and photography during the 1800s. She also examines the New Negro Movement of the 1920s, the era of Civil Rights and Black Nationalism during the 1960s and 70s, and the emergence of new black artists and theorists in the 1980s and 90s. New evidence suggests different ways of looking at African-American art, confirming that it represents the culture and society from which it emerges. Here, Patton explores significant issues such as the relationship of art and politics, the influence of galleries and museums, the growth of black universities, critical theory, the impact of artists collectives, and the assortment of art practices since the 1960s. African-American Art shows that in its cultural diversity and synthesis of cultures it mirrors those in American society as a whole.

Tales of South African Gospel

$13.58

Sheer Sound’s Tales of South African Gospel collects 16 examples of contemporary gospel, a genre that enjoys immense popularity in the region. Some of the slicker tracks, like Lundi’s “Thembele Kuye” and Zodwa’s “Indlela,” have more in common with American urban CCM, but choir-heavy cuts from Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Amadodana Ase Wesile, and St. Thomas YMG dutifully utilize the rich harmonies and melodies that fuel much of South African folk music. ~ James Christopher Monger, Rovi

Putumayo Presents: African Reggae

Putumayo Presents: African Reggae

$11.98

A compilation that calls itself Putumayo Presents: African Reggae but doesn’t contain anything by Lucky Dube? Were there no Dube recordings that Putumayo could have licensed for this release? Given that the late Dube was the best-selling South African reggae singer of the 1980s, ’90s and 2000s, it might seem strange that there are none of his recordings on Putumayo Presents: African Reggae. But then, Putumayo have always made unlikely and unorthodox choices when it comes to compilations; that’s a big part of what makes their releases so much fun. And despite the absence of anything by Dube, this disc takes an intriguing look at reggae from the African continent–or at the very least, African pop with a reggae influence. Not everyone on African Reggae is a full-time reggae artist, but all of the selections–from straight-ahead roots reggae to reggae-influenced African pop–at least employ some type of reggae beat. So Putumayo, true to form, follows a basic theme but takes a lot of liberties with that theme. A hardcore roots reggae outlook prevails on Kwame Bediako’s “Steppin’ into Zion,” One Love Family’s “Bo Ten Qu’Luta,” and Bingui Jaa Jammy’s “Congo Natty,” whereas Nino Galissa’s “Krebo Cheo,” Ismael Isaac’s “Magno Mako,” Ba Cissoko’s “On Veut Se Marier,” and Zoro’s “Jabulani” are essentially African pop with a reggae influence. Given how widespread reggae’s influence is, Putumayo could have easily come up with some reggae-influenced recordings from Arabic North Africa (Morocco, Algeria, Libya, Tunisia or Egypt). But Putumayo focuses exclusively on Sub-Saharan Africa/Black Africa, spotlighting artists from Nigeria, South Africa, Cape Verde, Ghana, Burkina Faso (formerly Upper Volta), Guinea-Bissau, and the Ivory Coast–and the fact that there is such an impressive diversity of artists south of the Sahara allows Putumayo to assemble a compilation that is unpredictable yet remains true to its basic theme. One wishes that this 41-minute CD contained another 30 or 35 minutes worth of recordings; even so, African Reggae is yet another enjoyable compilation from Putumayo. ~ Alex Henderson, Rovi

The Making of African America (Paperback)

$28.33

An award-winning historian`s sweeping new interpretation of the African American experience. In this masterful account, Ira Berlin, one of the nation`s most distinguished historians, offers a revolutionary-and sure to be controversial-new view of African American history. In The Making of African America, Berlin challenges the traditional presentation of a linear, progressive history from slavery to freedom. Instead, he puts forth the idea that four great migrations, between the seventeenth and twenty-first centuries, lie at the heart of black American culture and its development. With an engrossing, accessible narrative, Berlin traces the transit from Africa to America, Virginia to Alabama, Biloxi to Chicago, Lagos to the Bronx, and in the process finds the essence of black American life.

For courses in family studies and human development, sociology, African American studies, and black studies, this text presents a sociological study of life for families of African descent living in the US, with an aim to expose inequalities. Hattery and Smith (sociology, women and gender studies, and American ethnic studies, Wake Forest U.) argue that social institutions block full access to opportunities, and they detail issues that affect these families in terms of family formation, marriage rates, and cohabitation; childbearing and childrearing patterns, intimate partner violence, HIV and other social and health issues; educational attainment and occupational segregation; welfare and wealth; and African American males and incarceration. They use the race, class, and gender paradigm and stress the role institutions play in these areas. Some of the data was drawn from the US Census and interviews the authors conducted. An exclamation of definitions of black history from W. E. B. Du Bois`s The Souls of Black Folk and a survey of early black women historians lend further dimension and authenticity to the volume. A bold contribution to the growing fields of African American historiography and the philosophy of black history, African American History Reconsidered offers numerous analytical frameworks for understanding and delving into a variety of dimensions of the African American historical experience.

The Gullah People And Their African Heritage

The Gullah People And Their African Heritage

$61.17

The Gullah people are one of our most distinctive cultural groups. Isolated off the South Carolina-Georgia coast for nearly three centuries, the native black population of the Sea Islands has developed a vibrant way of life that remains, in many ways, as African as it is American. This landmark volume tells a multifaceted story of this venerable society, emphasizing its roots in Africa, its unique imprint on America, and current threats to its survival. With a keen sense of the limits to establishing origins and tracing adaptations, William S. Pollitzer discusses such aspects of Gullah history and culture as language, religion, family and social relationships, music, folklore, trades and skills, and arts and crafts. Readers will learn of the indigo- and rice-growing skills that slaves taught to their masters, the echoes of an African past that are woven into baskets and stitched into quilts, the forms and phrasings that identify Gullah speech, and much more. Pollitzer also presents a wealth of data on blood composition, bone structure, disease, and other biological factors. This research not only underscores ongoing health challenges to the Gullah people but also helps to highlight their complex ties to various African peoples.Drawing on fields from archaeology and anthropology to linguistics and medicine, The Gullah People and Their African Heritage celebrates a remarkable people and calls on us to help protect their irreplaceable culture.

Contemporary African American Theater (Hardcover)

Contemporary African American Theater (Hardcover)

$306.58

The Black Arts Movement was sparked by the Civil Rights movement and the urge to produce and revitalize functional, realistic, and holistic symbols to express African American creativity. When Larry Neal began his quest for a new dramatic form to epitomize African American self-determination he laid the foundation upon which his friends and compatriots-Amiri Baraka and Charles Fuller-would build. Expressing their individual protests through their writings, these artists soon united in their attack against Eurocentrism, which traditionally minimized or neglected the roles played by Africans and African Americans on the world stage. Their writings signaled a radical change in the form and content of African American writing, particularly drama. In this insightful examination of African American cultural history, the author explores the heart of the dramatic imagination of African Americans during the turbulent years of the Civil Rights and Black Power movements. The analysis of the works of these threeimportant dramatists reveals the roots of an Afrocentric approach to the theater, and introduces a new methodology for exploring Afrocentrism that is particularly suited to classes in African American drama and literature.

"Presenting an innovative approach to performance studies and literary history, Soyica Colbert argues for the centrality of black performance traditions to African American literature, including preaching, dancing, blues and gospel, and theatre itself, showing how these performance traditions create the `performative ground` of African American literary texts. Across a century of literary production using the physical space of the theatre and the discursive space of the page, W. E. B. Du Bois, Zora NealeHurston, James Baldwin, August Wilson and others deploy performances to re-situate black people in time and space. The study examines African American plays past and present, including A Raisin in the Sun, Blues for Mister Charlie and Joe Turner`s Come and Gone, demonstrating how African American dramatists stage black performances in their plays as acts of recuperation and restoration, creating sites that have the potential to repair the damage caused by slavery and its aftermath"–

The Black Renaissance in Francophone African and Caribbean Literatures (Paperback)

The Black Renaissance in Francophone African and Caribbean Literatures (Paperback)

$94.16

This work explores the limits and prospects of Afro-Caribbean Francophone writers in reshaping or producing action-oriented literature. It shows how Francophone literatures have followed a hegemonic discourse that leaves little room for thinking outside of traditional cultural and ideological conventions. Part One explores the origins of Afro-Caribbean Francophone literature and what the author terms "griotism"-a shared heritage of awareness of biological differences, a sense of the black hero as black messiah and black people as chosen, and the promise of a common racial history. Part Two discusses the formidable grip of griotism on Fanon, Mudimbe, the champions of Creolity (Bernabe, Chamoiseau, and Confiant), and well-read African women writers (Aminata Sow Fall, and Mariama Ba). Part Three seeks to subvert the discourse of griotism in order to propose a new autonomy for Francophone African writers.

African American Consciousness (Paperback)

African American Consciousness (Paperback)

$70.75

African American Consciousness focuses on ideas of culture, race, and class within the interdisciplinary matrix of Africana Studies. Even more important, it uses a methodology that emphasies interpretation and the necessity of interdisciplinary research and writing in a global society. Worldview, culture, analytic thinking, and historiography can all be used as tools of analysis, and in the process of discovery, use pedagogy, and survey research of Africana history. Advancing the idea of Africana Studies, mixed methodology, and triangulation, the contributors provide alternative approaches toward examining this phenomena, with regard to place, space, and time. The essays in this volume include Reynaldo Anderson, ?Black History dot.com?; Greg Carr, ?Black Consciousness, Pan-Africanism and the African World History Project?; Karanja Carroll, ?A Genealogical Review of the Worldview Concept and Framework in Africana Studies?; Denise Martin, ?Reflections on African Celestial Culture?; Serie McDougal ?Teaching Black Males?; Demetrius Pearson, ?Cowboys of Color?; Pamela Reed, ?Heirs to Disparity?; and Andrew Smallwood, ?Malcolm X`s Leadership and Legacy.? The researchers in this volume investigate, explore, and review patterns of functional, normative, and expressive behavior. The past and present of Africana culture is represented, showing how reflexivity can be an adjustable concept to organie, process, and interpret data. Moreover, humanism and social science demonstrate how researchers establish, extract, and identify the limitations and alternative approaches to research of the historic conditions of black Americans.

The Rough Guide to African Rap

The Rough Guide to African Rap

$11.98

Perhaps the greatest craze in African music yet, the advent of African rap has encompassed the whole of the continent, with performers popping up in every country and in every tongue. Taking note of the wave is this Rough Guide compilation that takes a stab at covering the bulk of the major regions and performers, though the full spectrum is far out of the reach of a single disc. The rap of Africa is in many ways far more lyrically driven than beat-driven, as opposed to the heavy regard of the all-powerful beat in American hip-hop. The lyrics are generally based in social commentary as is the majority of African music, refreshingly different from the bulk of American rap’s posturing. What one might note here most surprisingly though is the amazing homogeneity of the rappers themselves. Each one has his own style to some degree, but there’s an overall degree of fluid slickness and cool, relaxed delivery, reminiscent of the French rap scene (MC Solaar in fact was originally based in Africa). What changes notably from track to track however is the backdrop and the language in question. The various artists continually make use of both traditional instruments, local musical flavors, and native tongues to assert their originality, and more importantly their origins. The album opens with a Tony Allen collaboration with London rapper Ty, then moves into the pinnacle of current South African rap with the somewhat harder Prophets of da City. The omnipresent Manu Dibango displays his ability to turn a trick with a rapper in “Senga Abele” with some surprising fluidity, and the godfathers of African rap, Positive Black Soul, show off the natural tongue-twisting ability of the Wolof language. Tanzanians X Plastaz interestingly make use of influence from the Maasai tribe, a surprisingly functional mix of the contemporary and the extremely traditional. Reggie Rockstone from Ghana doubles up the previous influences as he uses some funky Afro-beat loops à la Fela over which he raps in Twi in a bouncing style reminiscent of some early-’90s American (and British) acts like Das EFX. Mabulu uses the marrabenta guitar style as a backdrop and Angolan Das Primeiro mixes in aspects of other Portuguese colonies with samba and morna finding their way into his stylings. Representing the Dakar scene (the ultimate hotbed of the style) is Pee Froiss. South Africans Trybe mix some five or six languages with a sultry drum loop and early Tanzanian act the Hard Blasters present the ultimate reworking of the Fu-Schnickens sound. After a quick stop in Congo-Kinshasa, the album finishes up with the Malian trio Tata Pound, whose machine gun-delivery is something worth hearing regardless of language. African rap is a pan-continental craze right now, but it’s quickly splintering into separate styles and forms. This compilation does an admirable job of collecting the various threads and showing both their diversity and their similarity. ~ Adam Greenberg, Rovi

The African American Roots of Modernism (Paperback)

The African American Roots of Modernism (Paperback)

$58.84

The period between 1880 and 1918, at the end of which Jim Crow was firmly established and the Great Migration of African Americans was well under way, was not the nadir for black culture, James Smethurst reveals, but instead a time of profound response from African American intellectuals. The African American Roots of Modernism explores how the Jim Crow system triggered significant artistic and intellectual responses from African American writers, deeply marking the beginnings of literary modernism and, ultimately, notions of American modernity. In identifying the Jim Crow period with the coming of modernity, Smethurst upsets the customary assessment of the Harlem Renaissance as the first nationally significant black arts movement, showing how artists reacted to Jim Crow with migration narratives, poetry about the black experience, black performance of popular culture forms, and more. Smethurst introduces a whole cast of characters, including understudied figures such as William Stanley Braithwaite and Fenton Johnson, and more familiar authors such as Charles Chesnutt, Pauline Hopkins, and James Weldon Johnson. By considering the legacy of writers and artists active between the end of Reconstruction and the rise of the Harlem Renaissance, Smethurst illuminates their influence on the black and white U.S. modernists who followed.

The Rough Guide to African Blues

The Rough Guide to African Blues

$11.98

It is common knowledge that the origin of the blues lies in West Africa, and that it was carried to America by slaves. The Rough Guide to African Blues explores the blues in its native setting, as it were, in mostly acoustic settings, although the vintage sounds of Ayaléw Mèsfin & Black Lion Band from Ethiopia add a big-band touch (whether they really qualify as blues is perhaps debatable). One of the most authentic-sounding pieces combines American Corey Harris with the late Malian guitar legend Ali Farka Touré (who was a fan of John Lee Hooker). But Afel Bocoum, Boubacar Traoré, and Nuru Kane all get to the heart of the blues, while Mariem Hassan and Etran Finatawa bring more electricity, somewhat closer to the music of Tinariwen, the hottest thing in desert blues, who are surprisingly not represented here. Bob Brozman teams with Djeli Moussa Diawara for an interesting African take on a Skip James song, combining guitar with the kora harp very successfully. Whether Sudan’s Rasha falls into the equation is also dubious — there’s more than a touch of Sade in her sound, but Daby Balde and Baaba Maal bring it all back home in excellent fashion. So what to make of this compilation? Like the curate’s egg, it’s good in parts, a sampling of African blues, but also a bit beyond. It would have been good to have had Ali Farka Touré alone, and this isn’t as complete as it might have been; still, it forms a more than reasonable introduction. ~ Chris Nickson, Rovi

African Americans in Chicago (Paperback)

African Americans in Chicago (Paperback)

$55.7

The story of black Chicago is so rich that few know it all. It began long before the city itself. "The first white man here was a black man," Potowatami natives reportedly said about Jean Baptiste Point DuSable, the brown-skinned man recognized as Chicago`s first non-Indian settler. It`s all here: from the site of DuSable`s cabin–now smack-dab in the middle of Chicago`s Magnificent Mile–to images of famous and infamous residents like boxers Jack Johnson, Muhammed Ali, and Joe Louis. Here are leaders and cultural touchstones like Jesse Binga`s bank, Robert S. Abbott`s Chicago Defender, legendary filmmaker Oscar Micheaux, Ida B. Wells, the Eighth Regiment, Jesse Jackson, Oprah, and much more . . . including a guy named Obama. Here is the black Chicago family album, of folks who made and never made the headlines, and pictures and stories of kinship and fellowship of African Americans leaving the violent, racist South and "goin` to Chicago" to find their piece of the American Dream. Chicago has been called the "Second City," but black Chicago is second to none.

African Americans of San Francisco (Paperback)

African Americans of San Francisco (Paperback)

$39.13

Beginning in the 1840s, black men and women heard the call to go west, migrating to California in search of gold, independence, freedom, and land to call their own. By the mid-1850s, a lively African American community had taken root in San Francisco. Churches and businesses were established, schools were built, newspapers were published, and aid societies were formed. For the next century, the history of San Francisco`s African American community mirrored the nation`s slow progress toward integration with triumphs and setbacks depicted in images of schools, churches, protest movements, business successes, and political struggles.

African Americans in Corpus Christi (Paperback)

African Americans in Corpus Christi (Paperback)

$55.7

From slavery to freedom, to education, to achievement: these words reflect the goals of African Americans who first came as slaves with the Spanish to this part of the Texas coast. Freed by the Civil War on Juneteenth (June 19, 1865), blacks soon established an active and viable community, a significant part of which was defined by the black churches. Prominent leaders emerged, including Solomon Melvin Coles, H. Boyd Hall, Rufus Avery, and Gloria Randle Scott. Using photographs from individual collections, as well as the Corpus Christi Public Library, Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History, and Texas A&M University Corpus Christi, African Americans in Corpus Christi reveals the history and people of Corpus Christi.

The Rough Guide to African Lullabies

The Rough Guide to African Lullabies

$12.72

There’s a wonderfully mellow quality to African music that makes it perfect for lullabies. The music here might be from all over the continent, from Cape Verde to South Africa and Somalia, but every track shares that soft, lulling quality. There are plenty of big names here, like Ladysmith Black Mambazo with a gorgeously delicate take on “Wimoweh,” and Angélique Kidjo turning jazzy. The collection doesn’t consist entirely of songs, by any means: the great Ali Farka Touré and Toumani Diabaté work their instrumental magic on “Simbo,” and Virginia Mukwesha is hypnotic on the mbira (thumb piano) — she also has the entire bonus disc devoted to her work. Saba offers a subdued take on the traditional “Huwaiahuwa,” a song that has almost Celtic cadences for a truly international feel. Kora player Ba Cissoko uses his instrument to wonderful effect on “Manssani,” with rippling splashes of notes and gorgeous tones from a second, electric kora. It’s perhaps apt that the disc should conclude with Miriam Makeba, Mama Africa herself, with the 1974 love song “Malaika,” to give everyone good dreams. ~ Chris Nickson, Rovi
